having just bought the st i have discovered oil on the rear brake shoes so i am assuming the rear final drive seal has gone is this going to be swine to replace
thanks rob ive cleaned it up yesterday and i will have a look today im sure it wont be to bad and being an airhead it can be fixed, dont know if this helps but the bike has been standing for a while
I did a write up with photographs, about this problem on my ST.
Turns out, the tube was fitted in two pieces, and this allowed oil to be flung up, into the tube, past the brake shaft O rings and onto the brake shoes.
I pulled both pieces out, made a new one piece bush, refitted, no problems since. (Remembering that lubricating of the brake shaft will now be a service item).
just had a look on motorworks and they do a one piece section for £ 9.55 it might be worth putting that in while i am at it ,i cleaned it all up today and put it back together and all seems ok but i might as well replace that tube
ok i think i will pull it out again order the o rings and put a dab of silicone grease on there and pit it back , i am assuming that the other grooves on the spindle without o rings are for oil travel ? motorworks quote 3x1 at 10 mm and 1 at 12 x1 well all mine look the same
I was watching a video last night re changing the seal on the final drive in a PD, looks pretty straight forward ish but you need the tools, castle head socket BMW tool , thin long reach socket for the lock nut, something to clamp the drive while you undo everything .
Do you need all the same stuff ?

no none of the above not sure how easy the tube will come out but while its apart might as well replace it ,i may have to drift it out i hope it sort of pushes out
I had one tube that was galvanised steel the other was either brass or brass plated. There no quarantine if either were original. It's years since I had one in bits but I'm sure you need to pull the inner cover to fit it. If you do then you'll need a new paper gasket.
Be nice if somebody who had split one recently could confirm
