Rear LED stop/tail light issues

Right, I know this issue has been around for a while but I can't seem to find the solution to it. I have a rear LED light panel from NN fitted to my GSA. It's been in use for around 12 - 18 months and this issue has periodically raised it's head. The red warning light on the instrument panel stays on and won't disappear.

It used to go off after the bike had warmed up and would stay off for the duration of my trip. However, currently it stays on. I have taken the panel out and cleaned the contacts, bent them forward to ensure a good connection but nothing works. :nenau

The only way to stop it has been to remove the LED panel and replace it with the original bulb and red lens set up.......

Any ideas welcomed:thumb

Do you have the correct panel? I know I read somewhere that the ABS and non ABS were different units:D

When I bought mine from NNs I stipulated it was the one with ABS that was required. Initially it was fine with no problems. It seems to be an issue that has got worse over the past few months.

Mine is from NN (Nippy Normans) not sure if there is a switch on it or not...:nenau

its not a switch.. its a little cap thing that connects two wire posts... and brings a resistor into play. They are by default included.. chucked the one that came with mine.. the 1100 doesn't need it.

get onto NN.. from all i've heard he's usually very good at resolving these issues.

If it worked sometimes and sometimes it didn't and now it just plain doesn't then my bet is you've a dry joint somewhere in the soldered connections or a crack somewhere on the PCB.

Get a multimeter and test - or I'm willing to have a look at the weekend, as you're only up the road.

Much appreciated Slowdown :thumb but I'm at work this weekend:(.....I'll try and get a meter on it tomorrow night. AFAIK all the LED 's are working at least all the red ones are. I'll have to check the white ones tomorrow...:eek

Hi mate, looks like the same one I fitted to Summer's 1150 about 10 months ago. Came from NN also, that one been fine could meet up and do a swap around to see if problem still there. :thumb2

And yes regarding NN, they are normally good on faulty gear:clap
I had a dodgy rear led light for mine and they replaced no prob, mind thats sitting in garage now as ended up putting a new 08 rear light unit on my ADV, thats was even better :D

Just spoke to NN who advised that the unit was bought on the 04/11/08 and as far as he was concerned should still be under warranty. I'm sending it back on Friday and will wait for a replacement.....:thumb2
 
they all seem to do that sir!! plus some of the LEDs failed on mine but NN replaced it even though the unit was more than two years old.

Right, now I'm really scuppered:confused:

Nippy Normans sent out a brand new unit which was received today. Great!! I thought and proceeded to replace the conventional bulb and standard red lense with the new LED unit and clear lens..

As soon as I started the bike up (after it had gone through all it's start up checks) the red brake warning light came back on:blast Went back to the conventional standard set up and no brake warning light problems.....:confused:

WTF do I do now???

I've heard that as the LED's draw less power than a bulb the computer thingy believes a bulb has blown and that some sort of in line resistor has to be fitted? Seems a load of bolloks to me as this unit is supposed to work with my bike...... Anyone know what an in line resistor looks like, where I can get one and how it's fitted.... :confused:
 
the resistor should be installed in the board itself.. with either a switch or a jumper to bring it into play. possibly with the letters IBS.. close by.

no evidence of that? then they've sent the wrong-un. or a duff un.
 
I have the same set up as you and occasionally, but not usually, the same problem.

Best thing to do is ignore it.
 
Chris, mine seems to do the same thing (maybe its an SE thing) no seriously if the battery is not fully charged the brake warning light often flashes, after a short run turn off with key then back on and all is well for rest of day. Maybe my battery is about to pack up. You are welcome to try my unit if you want, will post it down to you or can try next time we meet.

Never noticed this on mine (also from NN) but must admit haven't really looked, will check at weekend and get back to you if you want.

I don't think it will be the battery as it a fairly new one (Odyssey version). The problem also goes away as soon as the standard bulb is fitted :nenau
