Does the mudguard really work and is it worth having?

I am picking up my new GS on Saturday and wondered if that lump of plastic around the rear wheel has any practical use or can it be safely done away with?

Is it a requirement for type approval in some countries?

Any advice welcome

Tom

Mine doesn't work it is lying on the road to Diama in Mauritania :D

I think some countries insist on a mudguard, and that's about as minimalist as BM can get away with.

On older GSes without the EU symbol on the number plate, it's a handy place for your country sticker.

The rear mudguard, along with the beak, headlights, screen and lack of any visible frame, all add to the GS's unique fugly charm.

I don't think it does much else, if the accumulation of filth under the seat is anything to go by, and that little loincloth in front of the shock looks like it's just there to protect the spring's modesty.

Hence huggers.

Hi Tom, yes it's required for type approval in Germany - it's to do with the gap at the rear of the bike. Since the GS has a high mounted number plate, the gap would be too large without it.
