Having ridden to and around North Wales this weekend, for Tim and Gerry's fab 'do'(thanks Lads),we left Clynnog Fawr at around 10 am this morning, retracing some of Saturday's route (no....,not more gravel, grass and blind bends.........jeez!!!).
Making our way to Beddgalert and up to Capel Curig, via the views of Snowdon, the GS seemed to be po-going and feeling very 'hinged in the middle',definitely very 'un GS like' ( thinking back, the bike was riding pretty crap on Friday/Sat, so was the rider - before somebody says it).
So I reached down to turn up the the pre-load adjuster,a few clicks.
Pressed on for another couple of miles..............no difference,so pulled over for a closer inspection, whilst on sidestand, noticed smoke and burning oil coming from the collector box area.

A-ha, the rear Ohlins has dumped the contents of its oil over the collector box..............bugger. A leaking oil seal on body of the shocker looks to be the culprit. The shocker was definitely OK last week,as I cleaned the bike thoroughly on Weds/Thurs and there was no sign of the shock letting go of its oil then.
Still pressed onto Betws Y Coed for a stroll, then via Festiniogg to Bala (for an impromptu meet with Simon (Eassom) and Lisa @ Bala lake car park,to 'chew the fat' of the weekend and plan for meeting up at the Hog Roast),before dropping Jo off at Oswestry,to head back across the Pennine motorways.

So guys :-
a) What's a good mileage for a rear Ohlins,these days.
I reckon I've done about 30k-35K on this shock in 2 to 3 yrs.
b) What's the cost of a rebuild..........????
c) Presumably Harris are the best to do it (unless you can recommend anybody else) ??
d) What's the turn around time ???
e) Is it a long job or can you ride in-ride out (having booked a suitable appt with Harris first,of course.En route to the Hog Roast would be a great solution and they could set up the whole bike as well)........??
f) Is riding now with this shock a no,no ( before it's fixed) and have I already done terminal damage today by riding on it for 280 miles??

Give me the low down.............

wELL, I have WP on mine, serviced last week after 20K, rebuilt back and front £318.
Different bike now, www.mhracing.co.uk

HOW MUCH??

I wouldn't go there again!! Got mine done at "K&S Racing" St.Leonards on sea, for £50. 01424-439767.
"Egg" is your man. Keeps getting mentioned in TBM and other mags for his suspension know-how.

good news?

My rear Ohlins started leaking about 3 weeks ago from the preload collar so I rang Richard at Harris for help
He said that they should be rebuilt at about 15 - 20 k and turn around about 1 week
So I sent mine off recorded and insured (£18 at post office) and it was back with me after 7 days
The bill was £153 but this included £40 for a new spring as I decided to go up a rate (now 160 - I'm 20 stone pillion and luggage are 13 1/2 stone and this was Harris's advice
The oil was well shagged but I ride hard on unclassified roads
Sam at Harris complemented on condition of shock after 25,000 miles and it feels like new again now
I was led to beleive that an average price for a plain overhaul is about £100 but call them they will happilly advise you
Direct line to workshop is 01992 532501
Hope this helps

shock rebuild

Had my rear Ohlins serviced after about 20,000 miles at KAIS in Atherton near Manchester, cost £70. They usually have an ad in the services page of the MCN

KAIS

What are KAIS like,Harris recommended them as their agent,it's a bit closer.
Harris quoted about £85 for a shock service and replacement of bushes/oil seals etc.If anything is damaged, they will charge extra.

Listen guys I`m a f----k---- baker, I rode my bike in and picked it up 3 days later, FIXED by the best man in the business.

As far as I`m conserned it was the best £318 I have spent this week.

Everyman to his job, if he had said £418 I would have paid because it was worth it to me.
