Rear Preload

Can anyone please explain to me the mechanism behing the preload adjustment. i.e. what does it mechanically alter in the rear shock?
If it simply compresses the "main" spring, would this have an impact if you consistently left a high preload setting on a bike parked up on it's centre stand.

It simply compresses the main spring, as you thought. It is a hydraulic ram arrangement which pushes a 'collar' down to apply preload to the spring. Can't see a problem with leaving it in any position.
