Just spotted that the rear luggage rack (apparently called a baggage porter) has broken on my 1100GS:(

I use a H&B top box that has a fair overhang on it so suspect that has assisted in its failure.

Can these be repaired i.e. welded or plated in some way, it's made of aluminium, or is it replacement only?

Part 1 on here

As its a quite thin casting, I'd be surprised if you could get a strong enough weld to carry the load of a 'full' rack / topbox - the last thing you'd want is for it to crack again away from home.

That said, there are some good welders out there so it might be worth a go :nenau

In your position I'd probably give motoworks a call for a second hand one.

Subframe is OK just checked:thumb

Now looking to repair the rack with plates, a new one will fail the same, surely?

I have searched the TT site to locate their reinforcement part for that area to no avail.

This may do the job....:nenau

I know it says BMW Topbox but....looks like a simple reinforcement for the ally rack...bolted to the rear mountings of the Pannier rail.

I had this same problem half way round a 5000mile trip fixed it with gaffa tape some sticks from around the campsite and a few cable ties which got me home.
The problem was too big a topbox without the supports, (should of paid attention to the posts on here).
Fortunately managed to pick one up off fleabay for £4, (the postage was another £9) and shortly after a proper Givi rack with the proper supports (£11same place).
Still got the broken one if you're looking for a set, but if you're looking I 've had some stuff off a guy in Scotland who appears to be breaking an 1100 goes by the name of davechris1726 on ebay.
If you can wait they often come up, if you can't....

If you find a source for the support brackets I am interested, bought a givi v46 and they are missing, I have asked Givi if they are available and am awaiting a reply from Italy, I will update if they are available.

They do weld, but not very nicely.Best bet is to make a little plate to fit behind the crack and bolt it through in three or four places, then bin your over weight topbox and buy one of my super dooper light weight racing ones:D

Mine cracked too - welded no problem with light reinforcement on inside (not seen). One side only ?? - my guess .... was caused by lifting rear of bike up , rather than load .... time will tell !!
Easy to take off too !!

I just discovered that I have an identical crack to the one below :blast I too have a H&B top box

Rather than welding I'm considering bolting two plates on either side of the crack...has anyone tried this with success?

My other question is how to reinforce the top box/rack. These look useful but not suitable as I have TT pannier racks & they wont fit.
