Rear shock advice.

So how easy is this to swap over? I've checked in the Haynes manual and it doesn't mention supporting the wheel or needing to compress the shock?

I'm going to attempt the swap over this evening to my "new /secondhand" Ohlins. :bounce1

You'll have fun with that. The Ohlins is too long for the bike when it's on it's centre stand.

A real concern with the Ohlins is they can put too much strain on the paralevers UJ causing the drive shaft to fail. When you get it rebuilt ask themabout reducing the length to match your original.

Is this my Newbie wind up? :bash

I've measured it and the shock is exactly the same length as the original at 500mm, okay the spring length is 210mm as against 200 however the preload can be adjusted accordingly.

Some one tell me he's winding me up, I'm cracking a beer open at 7 and getting the spanners out!
 
No it's not a wind up. The standard length Ohlins is longer than the standard GS shock. If yours is the same as the original then somebody sensibly had it made the proper length.

You'll soon find out if both wheels are on the ground when the bikes on it's stand.
 
Rob thanks for the link I really appreciate the time you've taken and the advice you've given me in the last week. It's been most welcome, thank you once again.

I've read and digested the link and there seems to be a conflict of opinion and I'm leaning with when the bike is sat on the difference is negilable.

My other problem is the original shock I've just taken off is definitely 500mm as well?

The shock went in easy enough and the rear wheel is the same hieght off the ground?

torque settings for the shock, now there's a minefield!

Guess who just sheared the fixing bolt to the paralever assembly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess 30ft/lbs was to high!

Can anyone recommend anyone local to me who can sort out?

Tish tish and poppycock! That Ohlins was not too long on my stock paralever.

Both wheels were not on the ground when on centre stand. Far from it. It was also a stock item and not made shorter by me or anyone else (I bought it new)......so.....(insert raspberry sound).
 
Chilipepper...My advice (with any paralever shock) is to not have the preload wound up too high. As I understand it you should try and keep the shaft pretty much in line with the gearbox so as to avoid unnecessary strain on the UJ. So, if you have been travelling with a pillion and luggage, slacken the preload off when solo to avoid a jaunty angle which should help with the longevity of your shaft etc.

Just tried to get one for my paralever and according to local dealer no longer available from BMW!! so it looks like I will have to have one made up ( the local engineer is very reasonable ) the only problem with that is I don,t know what steel to use anyone got any ideas?
