Bike just had it's 12000 mile service and now realising the rear sock has been leaking oil since. Initially I just thought the rain was washing oil residue off after the service but it is definitely leaking.
Problem is we are in holiday week in N Ireland and the dealers are now closed until Thursday. I am supposed to be on the Ferry to France on Saturday and I am working until Friday. Will I get away with it if I travel? Is there an easy fix? I will be riding solo but with camping kit so a little weight on the back. Could be touring for about ten days.:blast

Any suggestions or advice is welcome.

If it needs servicing may be worth calling around to see if the service agents have a spare you can use, MCT, Firefox, ABE have all been used by members of the forum, could be worth a punt even if you have to pay for expensive shipping whilst yours gets.. refurbished or whatever

Mine has been leaking since at least March, when it had perhaps 15,000 miles. Ive been told to expect the suspension to go very bouncey when its on its way out. Im not there yet but in sure it will happen. On that basis you will probably be ok for a while yet?

Maybe try a wanted thread to see if anyone has a 'post-upgrade' spare in their garage? You never know you may get lucky.

Changing the rear shock is not complicated, assuming you have the tools for the job and some idea of how to use them - or a mate who does.

I have had a rear shock rebuilt by Firefox.
They are highly recommended..
I was informed by the main dealer that it would need to be re programmed to the bike (it was the electronic version).. I didnt bother and it worked / adjusted fine!!

Leaving the shock to top leaking (i.e. run dry) will ruin the internals. So get it rebuilt before its too late. Or you might be planning to fit Wilbers or whatever in which case it wont matter so much if its ruined.

Hi ive got a 1200 gs 2006 standard shock in great condition i could get on special delivery to you tomorrow if need be. its a standard shock

Likewise I appreciate you are under time pressure but I can recommend MCT in Stowmarket, they rebuilt my leaking ESA rear shock for £140 inc vat and courier delivery service at 35,000 miles and its been perfect ever since.

I really want a Wilbers setup but finances demand that MCT likely to be my next move.

Just as an update, I sent my front shock off last week to MCT for repair/service as the front end was starting to feel decidedly wrong on a recent tour to Italy. The front wheel vibration came through the bars at speed and damping felt off.

I got a call today from Darren at MCT to say that the internal bush had failed allowing excess side play in the shaft which caused seal failure and basically the shock was on its last legs. For an extra £22 on top of the basic shock service they have replaced the shaft bushing and rebuilt the shock to as new, so for £160 odd inc Vat and return courier that's a result compared to about a grand for a replacement via BMW.

I'll be glad to get the GSA back on the road, commuting on the R1 is causing me back ache. I just wish I had done both shocks at the same time.

Excellent service again from MCT. :thumb2

I had a Dutch Built WP emulsion shock that I did NOT have rebuilt by MCT. It came back rock hard. Maybe it would ben in but soon enough broke it's bottom "foot" aka fork. Buy cheap. etc

Do you mean you had it badly repaired by MCT, or by somebody else which lead to failure ??

Either way, I hope you complained in a suitable fashion and got some resolution to your problem ??

MCT seemed too expensive so i went with local motocross suspension service bloke.

There was no way I could prove the over-stiff damping broke the shock's alloy foot but there was really no other explanation. I put it down to experience.

You tend to get what you pay for mate.......

Buy cheap, buy twice and all that

I used MCT a short while back as my front shock was leaking, quick turnaround and not too pricey either
