Just had an annual service (£360 including £110 for removing a snapped exhaust port stud!). Invoice arrives with an estimate to replace the rear shock which "needs replacement". Now whilst I did ask them to give the shock the once over, at no point did they mention that the unit was beyond repair....no phone call, no mention when I collected the bike no nuffin!

I also have a B*W car....nearly 20 years old and fraying around the edges but still mechanically sound. How come after 20 years and 85000 miles the shocks are still OK, but the GS unit packs up within 14000 miles? Has anybody else had this happen at this stage?

I suppose in B*W defence I do fall into the "supersize" category on the average weight poll but surely you would expect the shock to last longer than 14000 miles. Unfortunately the bike is now out of warranty so looks like a phone call to WP as the B*W replacement unit is nearly £400 fitted, this works out at nearly 3p per mile!

Someone brought this up last week.......

Try contacting Hans Kruger at Calendonian Engineering in Glasgow:

15 Glen Artney Road
Glasgow
G69 9NS

T:0141 779 2335

My info may be out of date, but these are the contact details I've kept for when I need them.

He used to charge £100 to cut open the shock, rebuild & refill it then put it back together with a threaded top. This makes it rebuildable in future - & he gives a 2yr warranty on the job.

HTH & let us know how you get on.

You did well to get 14,000 out of it. My GSA one went at 5k, my mates 1100S went at 8k.

Original shocks made by Showa (Honda) so are typical Jap crap.

Still on the originals at 23k.......& see no need to change them (for now). Mind you, I'm only 11st so the bike works them more than I do. ;)

Still on my originals after 67000km (15 stones) and some silly off road stuff too .....but then this is on a superior 1100 :D
