Rear shocker/ oil

Hi kids

Ive had a minor accident with my rear shocker and
let some of the oil out. Do you know if you can refill them
or am i totally screwed.

1. You're totally screwed - they're a sealed unit.

2. What kind of minor accident would let oil out and yet still render the shock useable?

3. There are people that rebuild OE Showa shocks (even though they're not designed to be service units). Steptoe has a contact in this area, I understand...

I was fitting my new hard parts and the pipe was in the way
stopping the hard part from seating properly so i slackend
of the 10mm bolt to adjust it and the oil peeeeeddd out.

Its just a poor excuse to buy some WP suspention.

Aahhh...the hydraulic preload adjuster. Not sure, but you may be able to top it up if you release all the preload with the bike on the centre stand. Don't know how.....anybody got any suggestions?
 
I seem to remember doing something similar on my old rt which I found on the american rt website-transformed the bike by reinstating the preload. I can't remember the details, but i recall removing the remote reservoir, pushing the piston up, and refilling with engine oil. If you do a search on bmwrt.com, you'll probably find it,

Thanx guys the job is now sorted
I took of the preload adjuster clamped the pipe so no more
oil would run out. Pushed the cylender in the resevour back
and just topped it up. But i had to do i twice to get enough oil
in.

Did mine today. A quick synopsis.

Clean around the area to get rid of any dirt.
Use a clear bag or something to put around the reservoir whilst you unscrew the preload know. WARNING - there should be a small ball bearing and spring that will fall into the bag. These are only used for the 'clicking' noise when you adjust the preload. Should you lose them then don't worry.
Wind the preload out as far as possible and do the same to the rebound. Now would be a good time to clean these two and oil.
Loosen but not undo the bolt/nut that holds the reservoir to the frame.
Put a cloth under the reservoir and then undo the rubber pipe bolt. Oil may seep out.
Turn the reservoir upside down to remove the old oil.
Mount the reservoir upside down on the frame and tightened the nut/bolt.
Push the plunger in the reservoir as far down as it goes and then top the reservoir up. I used hydraulic oil for jacks etc.

* Connect the rubber pipe and tighten the bolt up.
Tighten up the preload as far as it goes in, bounce up and down on the rear suspension a few times.
Slacken off the preload.
Undo the rubber pipe bolt and push the plunger down as far as possible and refill with oil.
Go back to * and repeat until you cannot top the reservoir up any more.
I would suggest using 2 new copper washers on the rubber pipe bolt once you have finished topping up the oil.

Now to put it all back together again ...

Undo the reservoir frame bolt, mount the reservoir the correct way up and tighten the bolt/nut.
Using a dab of grease on the spring and ball bearing, put these in the reservoir body and put the adjuster knob on. Be careful not to lose the spring/ball bearing.
Tighten the screw in the top of the adjuster knob.

Adjust your preload and rebound settings.
