Hello,
I have a 2008 GSA and when it had it's WoF (NZ's MOT) the inspector noticed an 'oil leak from rear suspension' as an advisory.

A couple of questions:
Could this be a result of the bike not being used much - if so, will it resolve itself with more frequent use?
If the shock needs replaced, are there any recommendations as to which option to use? The main dealer quoted me a figure which is probably as much as the bike is worth, so I'm looking at alternatives to OEM.
Is replacing the rear shock a DIY job, or does it need specialist tools etc?

Many thanks,
DA

If it is ESA your options are more restricted and expensive , regarding the leak stopping if you use it , I doubt it BUT I would clean the shock thoroughly and ride the bike , monitoring any further leaks .

Replacement is easy enough for the average DIY mechanic but you MUST use heat on the lower bolt or risk stripping out the threads in the swinging arm , there a a couple of online tutorials

All I can add to Neil W's comment is. Have a search for somewhere that rebuilds shocks. Even if it's ESA - I don't think that affects the rebuild. There must be someone doing it?

Thanks - apparently people who can rebuild shocks are few and far between in NZ, but I reckon it will be cheaper than a new unit.
I did have a quick look at the shock - I can't see any evidence of a leak, but it wasn't an in depth examination.

The bike does have EAS, but there must be cheaper, non-EAS units that could be fitted? Then presumably the error codes would need to be cancelled.

Ttech in the UK rebuid and refurbish them but cost of postage and possible customs charges and delays may be a factor .
