My chum's 03 1150 has lunched it's crown wheel bearing, bits of metal everywhere. He had a new one put in only 7000 miles ago.

Any clues as to why this bearing has only lasted 7000miles? I stripped it down for him last night, don't appear to be any other problems so
I intend to just stick in a new big bearing and seal.

Is this a recurring issue with 1150s? Mine went in Italy last year and it seems a common problem looking at the threads on this board.

Just looking at the design of the thing it would seem there is going to be a lot of sideways/twisting force exerted on the bearing which it's not designed to take, I would think this would be exascerbated by heavy loading/pillions etc. With a double sided swingarm and two wheel bearings this loading wouldn't occur. Are we victims of fashion over reliability?

Anyway enough ranting :D Is it worth replacing the small needle roller bearing on the crownwheel whilst I'm in there?

cheers

Magnus

hello, believe this is a bit of a black art involving shimming and if you dont do it right youre back were you started, would love to know how its done myself, cheers

They don't fail that quickly unless there is another problem.
Who replaced it last time?.BWM dealer?.
Did they use the correct bearing and do the job correctly.(check shimming, not battering the bearing on etc).
It takes a lot to shag the other bearing though so i wouldn't have thought it would need replacing.Does it feel or look rough?.

the K series bikes have used the same bearing and set up since 1984 and they aren't known to fail.
You do get the odd K failure, but it's rare and usually just worn out, and thats after 100K miles.

Yours hasn't really exploded, THIS is what happens when it really explodes.:D

ouch. That'll probably polish out :eek

Shimming?? Is it not just a case of taking the old bearing off, heating the new one and dropping it on then popping a new seal in? Bollocks, might tell him to take it down to the dealer for a check over - it shouldn't have failed in 7k miles.
