After my little off Ive decided to put the new set of Tourances on to replace the TKC's for the winter.
after removing the back wheel i noticed there's a small amount of play in the wheel bearing, how much is acceptable or should there be none at all?
Any info would be gratefull before i replace the wheels tom.:beerjug:

Ian, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but when looking for a second hand GS recently I found one with an MOT advisory notice that stated slight freeplay in the rear wheel bearing. I contacted South London BMW and they told me that the only way to rectify this is replacement of the final drive unit. They quoted me £1300 for the part alone.

Having had a look around the forum there are a few posts about stripping and rebuilding the final drive unit.

Steve.

A certian amount of play is permissable for the rear drive to still be within spec. so don't worry too much just yet.

Run a search on final drives in this section and you'll come up with several posts that discuss this subject in detail and you should find what the tolerances are (sorry, can't remember).

If it's all Pete Tong then it's warranty, good will or ebay - NB if buying second hand the final drive was changed (ABS pickup) around 07/08 so make sure you get the right one for your bike.

Ian, don't hang about mate. Get it checked ASAP by the dealers. Why ride a bike with a worn final drive bearing ??

Mine gone, and that's on the RT,that has done 30K, bought in May 05, apparently they keep the GS one on the shelf.

Mine is out of warranty and I am waiting to see if they are going to give any good will:(

Bristol Motorrad have a tool to replace the rear wheel bearing. This must be much cheaper that replacing the final drive. Mine was done under warranty at 3000 miles,:D

Taken the Bike in for its annual service asked them to check the rear wheel play, picked it up saturday with a new final drive unit installed mileage 10,700.
Warranty runs out end of March £360 to extend so I think its on the cards.
