Felt like a rear wheel puncture, got off and found this. Fair bit of play in rear wheel (side to side) what do you think?

it could just be the oil seal, replace it and refill it with oil,or the bearing could be knackered causing the oil seal to fall to bits ,a few good folk on here who will rebuild it for you :thumb

had the bevel box ball bearing and bevel box output seal replaced about 3000m ago. I would have thought the seal would not fail without another issue, is the bearing failing likely to damage the seal?

Get Mikeyboy on the case. He's the master of the rear drive and only down the road at Melton Mowbray.

The symptoms as described suggest more than jut the oil seal I'm afraid.

Mike rebuilt my FD and replaced one of my drive shaft UJs. The transmission is a lot smoother than it ever was before he breathed on it.

My logic is that when the wheel bearing fails it takes out the oil seal. But if that's failed the other bearings inside the case can't be too far ff end of life. So rebuild the whole FD and be done with it for another 50K miles.

BMW originally specced 220ml for the oil content. They had warranty claims because some blew out excess oil and BMW always replace the whole FD for any fault. To reduce these claims they dropped the oil level to 180ml. How many are failing internally from lack of oil.

I refill with 200ml but will try 220ml next time and see how it goes. Don't add any more oil. as too much oil can be as bad as too little.
