Does anyone know what is consideded to be an acceptable amount of play at the rim in the rear wheel? My 2003 1150 gs has got about 30 - 40 thou side-to-side. This is a lot less than on old British 'bikes with which I am more familiar but it sounds quite a lot for a modern 'bike. Can the bearing be shimmed up or adjusted in order to reduce play?

There should be no play at all, if you do a Search there is about a weeks reading on the subject.

My bearing was replaced twice under warranty but I am still paranoid about it and check it every week now.

You need to establish the play is:

Could be the main bearing in the Final Drive / Bevel Box itself or play in the Paralever bearings.

Place palm of your hand on the end of the swingarm with your fingers on the Final Drive. Get someone else to waggle the wheel. If the FD moves independent of the swingarm, then it's the Paralever Pivot bearings. If there's no play between swingarm & FD, then it's the main bearin in the FD itself.

I replaced my Paralever bearings myself recently, took 2 to 2.5 hours including cleaning everything & lubing the splines. Bearings were £30 a pair from Sherlocks.

Thanks for this. The play is definitely in the final drive and not in the paralever bearings. My local BMW changed the crown wheel bearings last July so I reckon it's time for a call.

Thanks once again.
