Rear wheel removal

I need to get my rear wheel off to get it to a painter to repair a scratch in the rim. Without a service manual, and with this being my first wheel removal on a shaft bike, I've got no idea what's involved.

Is it pretty straightforward with a centre stand? Once the wheels out, will the weight all go to the front so it can be left for a week without the wheel?

Somehow this seems much more daunting than removing the wheel with chain drive.

It is easy....put it on the center stand and undo the bolts...yes it really is that easy.

The bike already rests on the front wheel, so no weight will be on the back wheel.

Yup. Easy peasy. Five bolts and it's off. Torx heads. No spacers. Nothing else to remove or move.

Why are you bothering to get scratch on rim repaired? Just leave it / cover it in any old paint / leave the road muck to cover it / ignore it....

Very easy if you have a good set of torx drivers, make sure you have the correct bit, if you damage the splines in the bolts it will be very difficult to remove the wheel.

Because the tyre fitter who scratched the rim has already paid for it to be repaired. I just need to get the rim to the painter!!

Yes, you need to switch on your ignition and stick it in first gear to stop the wheel rotating when you undo the bolts, had me puzzled for a while that one until I asked someone with a brain to think it through for me.

Refit: torque the bolts to 60nm

No you dont need to switch ignition on. Just put bike in gear.

Pocket the cash and skip the repair then... Out of interest, how much did they give you?

The fitter was a good guy and with the bike only 6 months old and in mint condition he immediately offered to pay for a repaint. Accidents happen and that seemed a very fair offer. That was several months ago. Now I need a rear tyre, it made sense to get the wheel repaired. I want it done because I like to keep my bikes in A1 condition and it would always niggle me. The fitter paid the painter directly so all I need to do is take the wheel in.

The painter used by Wollaston quoted £216 including VAT for a full repaint. The painter used by SBW quoted £162 including VAT, and that's who I've gone with.

Also easier to get wheel out, take the 'spray guard' off as well........

It is easy to get the wheel out, but I do find that removing the rear guard makes it even easier. I take both off when cleaning so that I can get to the deepest recesses of the swingarm. 3 bolts - Re-tighten to 8nm when refitting.

Splash guard doesn't need to come off to remove wheel.
