A quick (and very basic) question, if you don't mind.

I need to remove the rear wheel from my nephew's bike to take it to have a leaky air valve replaced. The BMW Riders Manual isn't particularly clear on whether I need to (a) remove the spray guard or (b) remove the silencer. It seems to suggest both depending on the model, without being very clear. It's a standard R1300Gs, spoked wheels, standard silencer.

Which method do you all prefer?

If dropping the exhaust, the manual seems to suggest that the clamp attaching the silencer to the downpipe is a 'use once only' affair (although, again, it isn't very clear). Is this true?

Thanks in advance...

It will come off with both the spray guard and the silencer still attached the the bike on the centre stand.

The part manual suggests that the exhaust clamp should be replaced if removed. Don't know why though.

I found it impossible to remove the rear wheel without removing the muffler or rear mudguard on the 1250 and 1300 gs. Never replaced the muffler clamp.

I’ve just done it this week . Remove the spray guard . You don’t need to touch the exhaust. Take out the 5 wheel bolts and lift the wheel up a tad as you move it rearwards . 5 minute job
Putting the wheel back on is easy as it locates and rests on the lug.

I’ve not bothered putting the spray guard back on

It depends on the exhaust. With the stock exhaust, you don't need to remove the exhaust.

Personally, I would remove the spray guard as I think it makes it easier and is literally a 30-second job.
