Rebuild 1100GS rear shock

Thinking of getting a replacement rear shock and considering other options.

Can the original shock be rebuilt/refurbished. I don't know what can be done, new oil? I was thinking of getting a hyperpro spring matched to my weight and getting the rest of the shock refurbished if that is possible?

Is this a good idea, or should I just spend a the extra and get a wilbers?

Quite like the idea of a refurbished original (hopefully better than original with the new spring), but would it be as good as a wilbers or just a waste.

yes it is possible to rebuild the shock but it needs to have a valve brazed on it to allow it to be re-gassed. As to how good it is compared to other shocks I can't really say other than in my case it was succesfull and at a fraction of the cost.

Where can you get the shock rebuilt and could they do the front one as well?
Also what sort of money would it be?

You might consider a Hagon... a damn sight cheaper than either Ohlins or Wilbers...

I seem to recall that you can choose which spring to go for - depending on your weight/riding style etc and so forth.

Shop around for an Ohlinns, the Hagon is OK but not the same quality.

You can get the original rebuilt, but its quite an old unit now and suspension technology has moved on, and once you put an Ohlinns on it you will wonder why you did'nt do it years ago.

Speak to John Gaskell at Revs Racing in Halesowen. He is the Wilbers agent for UK, but won't give you a hard sell and will probably have a range of options including rebuilds, Wilbers, YSS, Ohlins etc. He's a top bloke and can advise you based on his years of experience.

Having listened to him and used him before for my Yamaha rear shock rebuild, I went for a replacement Wilbers unit for my R1200GS with hydraulic preload adjustment and would highly recommend the Wilbers brand. They are bespoke "made to measure" for you at the factory, unlike the more expensive "off the peg" Ohlins units which still need work to tailor them to your weight and riding style. A real velvet-smooth ride compared to the stock unit.
