Does anyone know if it's possible to get the standard rear shock rebuilt?

There isn't much that is not possible, given sufficient time and money.
When I bought my GS the PO assured me he had just had the shock rebuilt, but if he had it was a waste of money, as the performance was mediocre at best.
For not a lot more you could probably get a basic, rebuilable, Wilbers or YSS, and if you buy it from a BMW specialist it will have the correct spring/ damping for the bike, and you wont need the multi adjustability which jacks the price up considerably.
Remember all shocks need a fluid change/regas/ service at regular intervals , so buying a shock with a good spread of dealers who do it at a sensible price is important - I get my Ohlins serviced anywhere for 45 quid but the sole Wilbers agent wants100 quid to service the Wilbers.
if you can wait second hand Ohlins sometimes come up on Ebay, and you will never regret spending the extra to get the best!

Yep as above I had a standard shock rebuilt it didn't last very long before the seals a going complete waste of money, however contrary to some opinions on here I found the Hagon shocks very good, they are rebuildable, my experience was limited as I didn't do off road, but lots of bumpy back roads and had no problems with the Hagon, still on when I sold the bike, and still on now I believe.
Have a look at the nitron shocks. http://www.nitron.co.uk/Motorcycles/BMW Made in the uk and are very well made for the same price as a wilbers. The nice thing with the nitron is the length of the shock is adjustable.
I had a hagon snap at 70mph and I'm not the only one. The top mount of the shock is ridiculously thin. Hagon won't warranty a shock that's done anything except used on the road.
The basic wilbers have been a nightmare for me but some people love them.
