If I create a route in, say, CSv8 and it is then installed on a machine running a later, and possibly NT version of Mapsource will the routing remain essentially the same? Should I insert waypoints to ensure it follows the route I originally created using "click and drag" - or perhaps one should just decline to recalculate when asked?

I've non-NT v8 and NT v9 on the same laptop :blast

If I calculate a route in one, and then recalculate in the other there only ever seems to be small chages in routes / times. I think that you'd only get real problems if using eg non-NT v6 and NT v9 and wanted to go down th M6 toll ;)

The way to test would be to do one route in non-NT, duplicate it, copy both into NT and then recalculate the duplicate IYSWIM. The original will still be in non-NT, the duplicate in NT :)

This used to quite a problem a few years back, even different versions of Mapsource used to cause routes to need recalculation when used on other peoples GPS’s. I think Garmin have got there act together a bit more these days, but still, I'd pin the route reasonably well with viapoints or waypoints as the route can drift, just don’t over do it as all points are announced on the GPS and it can become irritating.

I agree with Ebbo.

I am running V9 NT and frequently get routes from friends running different (earlier) versions, in both NT and non-NT variants.

My device only gives the usual prompt about the routes not matching, do I wish to recalculate? I just say, yes and away it goes. I then navigate the same route as my friends, without any significant differences.

I used to receive a second prompt, asking if (when recalculating) I wanted the quickest route or most direct? This no longer appears. I guess the device is now smart enough to simply convert the route into as close as possible.

You may find a difference if you calculate the route in a pre 2008 version on the pc and then use it in a unit that is running v2008.
I suggest this because Garmin seem to have sorted out the bios towards using minor roads in the former versions.I guess that the diffence would be noticed if the route was deviated from and recalculated route was used.
