Can I have your opinions on what brake pads work well in the GS? I have a 2013 90th ADV. It is still on the original set but want something with a bit more bite. What is a decent set at reasonable costs? ....TA

I use Ferodo from Steptoe at www.gsshop.biz.

I've used them for years and give my non ABS R1200GSA solid and predictable stopping power. They give good mileage considering I'm heavy on front brake.

More bite at the front = less brake pressure which causes the linked braking system to use more rear brake. Counter intuitive, but gentle front braking hammers the back brake.

I've got the Ferrodo have duty organic in the rear. Previously, used EBC HH sintered pads but they over braked the back end. Ordinary organic rear pads (including BMW OEM) are suitable only for non ABS bikes. The linked system on ABS bikes will chew though a pair in under 4000 miles.

EBC HH did a good job in the front. But so have the much maligned Goldfren HH.

I’ve also used Ferodo from Steptoe. I feel they work just as well as the BMW pads for a much lower price. Standard ORM pads were about £100 for a front set as I recall.

I took one look at BMW prices and walked away. Brembo make the callipers so they'll supply the pads anyway.

The last time I used EBC (on another bike) they did not last long? How long should you get(roughly) on the GS?
I don't really keep track of that Steve, I'd have to go back through service records.
How long they last is not really of concern to me.

What I meant by that was that an R6 I had only got around k1 miles , fair enough it did get hammered. Was just trying to get an idea of mileage and I know there will be a massive breaking difference in braking techniques ....TA

I had the bike for around 50,000kms (30k miles)

I "think" I only had pads on it once but as I said............I'd have to check to be sure.

Probably would have gone through more rear pads but I rode the bike for a good while with a virtually seized rear caliper.

Regardless of brand it depends on pad type. HH will last me about 15K in the back but they over brake the back end. Ordinary organic lasted less than 4000. But as said these should not be used in linked brake bikes.
HH last a lot longer in the front probs because the back brake is over working.

Ferodo Platinums are my preferred choice

Unless you are racing?? HH or Sintered pads are Too Hard and wear the Disc pretty badly!

In an effort to try and cut the pad wear on the rear of my 1st Generation/Mk1 1200GS, I changed to sintered pads whilst staying on platinums up front @27,000 miles there is a very visible difference between the front and rear brake disc wear!

Ferodo Platinums to me are a "softer" pad and you may have to replace them more often and the front wheel might be a little more dusty at the end of a 1000 miles But my front discs are like new whilst the rear is likely due replacing!
Its not really a problem for the meantime as the engine has gone Pop last Sunday!!

Ebay is your friend

Yep, Ebay Goldfren at £11.99 including postage. (rears)
These are excellent. Just don't even look at them. Replace with every back tyre.
Ignore the naysayers who equate reasonably priced with rubbish.
Myke.

Funny that.

The mark-up/profit on Newfren (now called Goldfren after rebranding due to the awful quality associated with the name) was huge compared to other makes of brake pad but i still refused to sell them after endless quality problems and an even bigger trade discount that was offered.

Your user experience is based on buying one pair every now and again, you've been lucky.

Try selling 20-30 pairs a week and having a 50% "problem" rate and you wouldn't be so enthusiastic. Hence why i stopped selling them, there's more to offering customer service than a large profit.
Whether the name change has improved the quality and the potential much larger profit offered doesn't interest me anymore.

With every other make of pad i've never had any problems whatsoever.
