Recently traded up from K1200S to K1300S, some thoughts...

I've had my K1200GT for four years. It isn't an only bike, so doesn't get used for daily commuting and stuff. The F-GS gets used more often, saving the K12 for faster journeys, sunny blasts and summer trips. I love the bike - the best bike I've ever owned for trips like that.

I have ridden K13's on various occasions, including BEFORE I bought the K12. The K12 just seemed much smoother and more 'together' to me. it may be that the 13s I rode were not run in or a bit ropey (though one was the new demonstrator). Or maybe I fluked a particularly nice K12.

I'm sure the K13 is more powerful but, to be honest, I can count the times when my chosen speed has been limited by the power from the K12 on the fingers of no hands at all.

I rode a lot of K1300S's before I road one I preferred to my K1200S. I have even ridden one that I preferred to my own 1300 (it was too expensive!). There is certainly nothing wrong with a good 1200 - and you're right, of course, power is certainly not something they're short of. The 1300 is more powerful but not vastly so and the way it makes its power means it actually doesn't feel as fast (which is a shame!). However its power and, more importantly, torque delivery is much more linear and available at lower speeds making it even more flexible than the 12. The result is that journey times are shorter without it feeling like you've ridden as hard and with noticeably less stress. That makes a difference to my life when my mileage has just increased to over 1000/week in less than pleasant riding conditions.

In the end it's what you want that counts and I needed a newer bike so a 1300 made sense. A lot of people seem to struggle with the decision whether to part with 12 to get a 13 and I just thought I'd chip in my tuppence worth. It's a personal thing. If I'd had the spare cash I'd have held onto the 1200 for sunny Sundays (or maybe I'd have just put towards the other 1300 I liked!) but I didn't so it's gone and I have a bike that's noticeably better in all measurable senses (except that its turning circle is slightly bigger). This thread was never meant to persuade - just to inform.

Had 2 K1200s', sold the first one as I knew my licence was doomed . . . it was mighty mighty fast. I got withdrawal symptoms and bought another a few months later. omehow, that one wasn't quite as quick, although still knew my licence was doomed.
I now have, among other BMWs a K1300R. Licence not quite as doomed, but about the most fun you can have with your clothes on, has quick shift, akro and no ABS.
I agre with everything Dogbytes has said. The bloody switchgear is a mess and the issue with the rear tyre is similar. I had Metzeler M1 on both K12's and they were fantastic, although the wear rate at high speed was frightening. I now have M3 which seem everybit as capable, although never feels quite as secure as the old K12's.
The K1300R seems a pretty underated bike, but for sheer grin factor, untouchable!

It's having a bit of a rest!

Having finished the job I was on, I'm back in Cornwall semi-permanently and I'm not riding the K13 every day. However every time I do get on it I'm amazed how good it is! You'd think I'd be used to it by now having done a little over 10k in 4 months. Having said that I may be starting another movie soon, so we'll be back to big mileages. At least this weather might have subsided by then.

On a slightly negative note, the new switchgear is already giving problems. The spring in the ESA switch seems to have packed in and the switch has to be physically returned to the rest position when flicking through the settings. Very annoying. I can see a letter to BMW in the offing - will let you know how I get on.

Another set of switchgear fitted, courtesy of BMW, last week. At least the customer service is good, even if the switchgear isn't! :)

Third set of switchgear started to give problems this week. Horn button is now or one to sticking and the starter switch refused to work on one occasion.

This is all rather sad - are these people incapable of solving the problem or do they have a huge stock of iffy components that they want to use up first?

Are the functions performed by the new switch gear the same as that on the old 12? If so a good spark may be able to change any plugs/sockets required to fit 12 switches to the 13. I suspect some cleverness regarding the switch from fiddly Japanese indicating switches to utterly logical bullet proof BMW trad switches might be required.

In fairness the switchgear is all I have to complain about. I ended up putting a set of HP footrests on and now it's perfect - or would be if the switches worked! The latest K13s have different switchgear (distinguished by different markings) they're supposed to be okay but I font know if they're a straight swap.

No, unfortunately not. The K12 I had had the old BMW switches with the indicators on either side. The very latest 13s have the same layout of switchgear as mine but have different markings and are supposed to fe better. Apparently they're different inside (according to Bahnstormer). However replacement switchgear is of the original type. Not sure if this is due to some incompatibility but will check. Hence my tongue in cheek remark about them having lots of dodgy ones to use up!
