I've got a b/w laser but stepdaughter no 2 (14) is bleating on about needing a colour printer for her school work. Thing is, she'll eat paper and ink like it grows on trees, so what's the cheapest to buy and run? Only needs to do A4 and printing needs to be "reasonable".

Keep the B&W laser and buy an Inkjet for the colour printing, i use a canon i965 its a 'hot' inkjet printer and does what I need brilliantly. Hookie inkjet cartridges keep running costs low(ish)

My B&W laser has just this second run out of toner, the cost of a replacement cartridge is more than the cost of a new printer:blast

Shops tomorrow:(

Get her an Epson All-in-one for less than fifty quid, Epson consumables are generally the cheapest, stay well clear of Lexmark and HP their inks cost a fortune unless times have changed.

I nearly fell into that trap....

I've got an HP laserjet colour printer and when one of the cartridges ran low I looked at prices and found that the cost of replacing just three of the four cartridges came to more than a new identical model printer.

I then found that the new models are supplied with much less ink in the cartridges, so in fact adding up the cost over x thousand pages, it was better to replace the cartridges still.

David...I'd approach the problem from the other way around....look at the pattern cartridge suppliers and see what the cheapest cartridges are, then look at the printers that take those cartridges.....I suspect that pretty much any known-name laserjets will produce stuff up to spec these days so the printer itself may be less important than the ink costs (a few seconds longer to print a full cover page won't be an issue outside of the most time sensitive office environment)

Paper isn't an issue.....a ream for under a fiver from wholesalers:thumb2

Here ya go...perfect example.....

NEarly exactly the same printer as we have in the Moto Morocco office.......four colour 2400dpi USB printer (we have a networked version but its very similar)

NEW PRICE £97.69 inc VAT

Replacement set of cartridges, £173.31 EXC Vat!

They don't tgive the volume of ink supplied in the original printer, but from the time it lasted, I'm guessing its around 70% less than in a full new cartridge :blast

We buy ours from a company called inkjets and toners (www.ijtdirect.co.uk)
IF you buy about 4 sets of ink they will give you a printer free. Ink cartridges are very competitively priced as well, usually cheaper than the printer is elsewhere. Talk to them on the phone and don't accept their 1st offer!
www.makingitgreen.co.uk is also part of the same company and will also match the ijt prices.

my HP photosmart 7200 has complete toner packs for £30 at costco (last time I went that was for 2 sets!) . I print a fair bit of shiet for work and the toner seems to be lasting well. The equivalent Epsom was going to cost around £30 per toner cartridge (oem) . I've had a number of epsoms over the years (through work) and I've never been impressed with the reliability and at least 2 had failed print heads just out of warrenty that would cost more than the printer to replace.

Some toner cartridges are refillable e.g. the Samsung ML1210/1510 series have a rubber bung in the side. A refill costs about £15 at Cartridge Express or similar.

Although, my seven year old ML1210 is getting a bit tired now - the paper feed rollers don't always grab the paper now, so this new one from Ebuyer will be bought once the current toner cartridge expires http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148076

Replacement printer.

Suggent you look at Samsung CLP-315W series.
Colour Laser printer. Full toner cartridges & wireless.
Stuck it in cupboard & print from any laptop in house without any wires.
Colour reasonable. Speed reasonable. Spurious toner cartridges available.
Currently one on Amazon at £115.00.

Suggest you steer away from Epson.
I got conned several times by the underhand software installed in these printers, which breaks European law.
With 3 printers I bought from them, they stopped after a couple of years.

It turns out they have installed a sheet counter in the unit, which shuts it down after so many sheets have passed through it. I only found out after I had dumped 2.
This "Fault" is not listed in manual, & is easily reset with correct button push combination.
Catch me once shame on you. Catch me twice, shame on me!

Can recommend my latest printer purchase

Epson Office BX600FW - it's a really quick colour printer, scanner, photocopier, fax, photo printer with card reader slots and lcd screen to print photos without a computer -- and it connects really easily over WiFi or Ethernet if you want to. - can get it for around £100

Then buy a set of replacement cartridges for around £35, with about 5 ml of ink per cartridge, or........ the much cleverer option.......

Buy yourself a Continuous Ink System on fleabay for around £40, and the ink will last forever. (Or at least it has so far - I've put the equivalent of three sets of cartridges through it so far as my wife is a primary-school teacher)

Then you buy more ink by the bottle (£15 quid for 4 x 400ml bottles) and top up the external tanks.

Recommended :clap:clap
