As my System 5 may be terminally ill I probably need a new helmet.

Who uses what for the wet and cold winter months? Full face, I'll forgo the
benefits of the flip front, I feel very lucky not to have had the "5" on my head when the latch release failed.

I'm not bothered about fancy paint, famous names, "premium" brands or fancy prices, just a well made, high quality helmet that doesn't let water past the visor seals, doesn't spray the inside of the visor with water through the chin vent and is available with a pin lock.

A relatively large visor area would be good, it wasn't until I got an Airoh S4 that I realised how restrictive the System 5 visor port is. (The Airoh is useless for wet weather though as the chin vent doesn't close and there is no Pinlock available.)

For years I have only ever bought top of the range lids. Shoei's, Arai's, etc. etc. I am very much of the mindset, how much do you value your head, pay the most you can afford blah blah..

I have recently had a lid bought for me (work) but to a budget of about £150. I bought an HJC.

Its a great lid! There is nothing wrong with at at all, and I was pleasantly surprised with everything about it.

So .... food for thought. There are some very good lids out there at sensible prices, and despite my previous mindset of 'expensive is best', you don't have to be suckered in to spending nearly £400 on one. :thumb

I used a HJC for years an thought it was a great helemt then bought a Arai TourX and to be honest I don't see where the extra cost comes in to it.
Due to replace the TourX and will probably go back to HJC

Shoei XR1100 is a good lid, big visor, comes with pinlock, great vents and doesnt let water in

Shoei XR1000 is the older model... should be a bit cheapers now :thumb

Or the Shoei Raid.. Was cheaper than the XR1000 and now replaced by the Qwest I believe....

Had all 3 (Xr1000, XR1100, Raid, RaidII)

XR1100 is best by far with good sized visor AND it's the best for ventilation. Other Shoei's vents weren't too good and others weren't good for in-helmet audio - very tight for ear pieces.

The Qwest [sic] probably merits further investigation since Shoei claim it's been designed for an upright riding position rather than a head-down sportsbike one.

Other than that, I'd certainly recommend the Shoei Hornet with this mod as an excellent helmet in all conditions -

I meant to add I found the lining very plush so was nice and warm too warm for the height of summer but perfect for Autumn/winter
