recommend a gps tracker what have you got fitted to your bikes

these loads on ebay what are they like

I have an Oxford tracker.

It's reliable and I ended up with the £70per year subscription with lifetime upgrades, so as long as I keep the subs up to date, they will provide a free tracker when this one expires.

how long do they last

I use a spot tracker (the Mk 1 version). Had it since 2008. The two lithium batteries last about a year and it works all over the planet, guaranteed.
If you set up system correctly it also saves all of your trips on google maps.
Cost about 150USD per year but also includes an emergency setup for getting yourself out of the poo if you are injured.
Up to mk 3 version now I believe

I'm curious how easy it is to find it by bad guys...
Thieves are more experienced, they break high quality chains, alarms, immo...
There must be a device which can trace if you have a tracker... or maybe I watch too much Bond's movies ?

I use a TK102b. It's cheap and simple and it works. You just put a pre-paid sim-card into it and you can track it by phoning the number. It sends a text message back with it's location.

The only downside is that you can't track it if it doesn't have phone reception. There is a way to set it up using gprs data to send its location to a server, but I'm not sure if it does that constantly or not, and if you can then see the last known location after it has lost reception. For this reason, I'm planning to upgrade to something a bit better. The TK102b was grand on my Deauville, but my GS is more valuable, so it's worth spending more on security for it.

Can thieves find a GPS tracker on a bike? I'm sure they can, but if it's placed somewhere hard to access, such as under the tank, it will take them time and tools to get at it. Most bike thieves lift a bike into a van. If they take it to a different location and find the tracker there, a proper tracker will show you where the bike has been, so you have some chance of recovering it.

Isn't the issue with all these devices that they need to be in the open air to work? No scope to 'hide' one on the bike if that's what you have in mind.
