Well my new bike Day looms on the horizon, forecast for Thursday is good so I took the opportunity to cross the last hurdle and call BeMoto to arrange the insurance transfer.

The additional premium from my 900xr is £204 until mid October...
That underwriter wants £1500 for a full year... they can keep dreaming.

Context
I'm 41
Full clean license riding for 13 years with no accidents. I am a truck and bus driver so have a lot of road experience and training. I even did the enhanced rider scheme training a few years ago, which they know about.

So, can anyone recommend some other companies to try when my renewal comes? Nearly 5x the premium for the XR seems excessive.

Have you compared the price of a new policy via Moneysupermarket or similar comparison site with that £1500 quote?

It might be better to cancel the current policy and take out a new one. Some underwriters do not like expensive new bikes (I'm assuming a new R1250GS instead of the 900XR).

Yes it's a new GS, I did run a quote through compare the market and got it below £900 after posting this, but that's still way higher than when I ran some quotes for a GS last year when it was coming in around 500... Insurance is a dark art to me.

Try the bike insurer to see what they quote. In my experience a new bike is quite a bit more to insure than one that's over a year old, due I guess in part to the cost of them usually having to replace it if it's stolen or written off. Add to this the cost of a new GS also makes it more expensive

It's also worth a try of going direct to some of the best quotes you get from the comparison sitestoo

All motor insurance premiums seem to have gone up massively since July 1st, based on underwriting risk and everything going up, parts delays
I wanted to add a bike in mid July and it was another £200, just to add it
I did the same thing, 2 years ago on a similar type of bike and albeit newer & higher value and it was only £90 with the same insurance provider
So, you either take it or leave it, seems to be the norm nowadays
Fully expecting my car/commercial vehicles to go up significantly at renewal in October with the same insurance provider-NFU Mutual

Insurance has gone up. My daughter has just had to renew. Got quoted DOUBLE her last year’s premium & after shopping around got it down to £100 more than last year.
Usual excuses of increased overheads for insurers, car parts, garage expenses etc.
Is it any wonder uninsured drivers are on the rise?

Your premium is higher because of your job, for some reason professional drivers are seen as a higher risk even though it has no direct relationship to motorcycling. I had the same issue when I had a delivery driver job, bike insurance near doubled the reason cited was professional drivers are high risk, became a warehouse man and the premiums went down; none of it makes sense.

I had agreed to buy a 1200GS Rallye from a fine gent on here. The cheapest insurance I could get was £7k. Oddly, a std TE was over £5k cheaper - I did try all of the comparison sites and also picked up the phone. The bod on the phone said that he wasn't surprised when he Googled the bike and saw the image.

I didn't buy the bike...

My previous bike had recently been stolen.

Is the GS a limited edition of some sort?

I didn't think so, it's the GS TE Triple Black so I thought it was one of the more popular specifications.

Thanks for the suggestions folks, I have already stumped up for the insurance transfer with my current provider via BeMoto so it looks like some comparison site browsing in late September.

make sure you get quotes 3-4 weeks before renewal, even if you do not have the renewal notice - do it earlier or leave it later and the price will be higher. Martin Lewis has researched this and it really is a thing

BIKESURE via Adrian Flux.
I have a 1992 K1100LT and a 2000 K1200LT. Both bikes, fully comp, including business use as an IAM observer £280 all in including legal insurance.
I am 59, 9 years protected NCD ( it's actually over 40 but they stop at 9 ) and am a full time student since I retired. I live in a high risk postcode, but, and I recommend this to everyone that can be bothered, I have done a BikeSafe course with Greater Manchester Police and of course as an IAM member did my Advanced bike test with them. These tow courses have given me quite a handsome discount at BIKESURE

The advice is….. as always….. just shop around and keep shopping until YOU find something that suits YOU, not some other (well intentioned) bod who has two bikes, one 30 years old and one 23 years old….. not a spanking new bike which YOU pick up on Thursday. There are no magical shortcuts, trust me. Yes, it‘s all very dull and a complete pain in the arse but hey, like a visit to the dentist, it doesn’t last forever.
