I am finally toying with the idea of a sat nav for the truck. I have relied on instinct, maps and luck for a long time now and think it's time to take the plunge.

I would need one for the whole of Europe and maybe beyond that a bit as well.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated :bow as there seems to be loads of different makes and models out there.

Many thanks,

Zumo 550. Comes with full European maps and enough memory to support other maps if required plus you get a car mount and leads plus the bike mount as well so can be used for both vehicles.

As it has an internal battery it can be used away from the vehicle for route planning while on the road.

Last but not least the pricing is great at the moment.

Zumo 550

+ 1 on the Zumo 550 :thumb2

When you add in the value of the mounts - it starts to look like a positive bargain, plus - it has a pretty good bluetooth interface for your phone.

I think it even sorts out your delivery schedule to minimise mileage??

Bridge Heights

Shame they havent solved the problem of bridge heights yet. AA Truckers atlas still in the bag and falling apart at the seams. They could have made it A4 size.
Still saving for a Zumo 550 to replace the MK 1 Quest. Still seems the best if you want it for bike use as well. Prices coming down slowly mid £300,s

I still use a navigator II and an AA bridge height map, there's a truck setting on Navigator but all it does is route you round towns instead of through them, ...."drive 165 miles then exit left" then just sit there and watch the world go by till she reminds you to exit left

Garmin Nuvi 5000 (Due out shortly)1st Quarter, 2008
Get big-time navigation and mapping with the large screen nüvi 5000. This super-sized navigator is designed for RV and truck drivers and gives a big picture of the route ahead without obstructing your view. You ride a bike, so I'd also recommend the Zumo, then you can swap it from one to the other.

Another possible cheap fix would be an old laptop with Garmin mapping on it and a USB GPS device plugged in, if you interested post up and I'll fill in the details.

This is specific to trucks and bridge heights.

TRUCKMATE The first portable satellite navigation system to include dedicated routing designed specifically for trucks and large vehicles such as coaches, buses and mobile homes - plus Snooper's multi-award winning speed camera location technology. This unique software will create a route based on the attributes of your particluar vehicle. Thanks very much for that, Kev :thumb I was going to order the Zumo today but didn't get round to it. Just as well I was lazy :augie :D I will definitely have a look at this. Cheers :beerjug::beerjug:

Gave them a phone and the guy was really helpful. He couldn't answer the question about Eastern European mapping.

This system uses Navteq (like the Garmin does) so I'm guessing that you can buy the mapping for like Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East etc.

Does this come on CD ? And does it then go onto the memory card ?

Would I need to get bigger memory cards ?

The guy gave me the phone number for Snooper, but they were closed for the day. Oh, and as you can tell, I know NOTHING about sat nav but have got myself into enough tricky situations abroad  :eek to realise that I need something like this.

Many thanks for all of your help :thumb2

How did you get on with the snooper. Thinkin about a gps for my truck aswell.

I use a Tom Tom. I bought a CD from ebay with all the bridge heights, silly voices and speed cameras. All for about £3. (not the Tom Tom obviously).
Never had a problem with it in 3 years.

Tom-tom now do a dedicated map for use with LGV's, I got a copy and installed it on my 730GO. It asks for your Height, Width, Length, Max Weight and axel weight. Works a treat too.
