Not a biking boot, not a hiking boot, just a decent waterproof walking shoe.

Just for walking the dog, etc, and maybe a 4 mile walk between pubs at the weekend.

I think Merrells are a bit too clumsy, and the M&S walking shoe doesn't provide too much stability.

So, anyone got a favourite that they'd recommend?

Cheers,

Neil.

I had a pair of North Face Hedgehog goretex lined hiking shoes and they lasted me over 4 years. There is a Hedgehog II now although I now have the Vindicator II's.

They do a mid-cut version of each too if you need ankle protection.

Whilst most of the North Face stuff for the last 15 or more years is high street fashion and you wouldn't see me dead in it, the old gear was great and their footwear has remained first class. I still have a good number of their clothing over 20 years old that refuse to die or wear out.

Keen's have a look at the range on their web site, I have several pairs and they are very comfortable, and hardwearing

Salomon or Scarpa

I have a pair of Salomon walking shoes, more the summer type as they have vented mesh panels. All day comfy and good for an all round walking shoe. Bought for off bike use on an Alps tour in 2010, never regretted buying them and plenty of life left despite heavy use on the dog walking front.

Also bought a pair of Peter Storm boots from Millets last year for winter use. Cheap and cheerful. Not bad on the waterproofing front but needed braking in and not as comfortable as the Salomons. The sole has now worn out despite the Salomons having had more wear. They have at least another year to go on top of the extra 6 months they already had.

Pays your money, takes yer choice. Will probably buy some Salomon Goretex boots before winter sets in.

I had a pair of goretex merrels with vibram sole - excellent but they squeaked, and so did the replacement pair.

On my second pair of Columbia's - quite trainer like, great in the snow, but a bit cheap if you fancy the other more expensive stuff. If you want to spend the money then a pair of lowa renegade II lows is what you want.

Of course I am slightly biased having size 14 feet which narrows my choice.

Bought some Merrell's Refuge Pro Ventilator Gore-Tex for £98 from Blacks.

Tried the Hedgehogs but there seemed to be a lot of 'loose fabric' at the front of my feet, and I preferred the fit of Merrell shoe - it 'grips' my feet better and feels more planted on the ground. Have noticed though that the tongue is not very padded, and you do sometimes feel the laces tight across your instep.

Altberg make brilliant boots which we use for biking and walking. They also make shoes. I have a pair which I use for work when the weather is poor or if I'm taking the bike - they are not gortex but I apply a little leadergris every now and again and they've been fine. They're also made in Yorkshire.

Same problem with my Merrels. Took three pairs before I found pair that didn't squeak. I take a 13 (47/48) so maybe just us big footed yetis that have a problem!

Rohan walking shoes, waterproof and quite rugged do it for my dainty feet. Main thing is the fit and you can always wear a pair of Sealskin socks on really foul days.
