Ive got a ground anchor in an alarmed brick built garage so Im not too worried when Im at home but after some of the horror stories on here Im thinking I should take more care when Im on tour.
I regularly tour on bike and only precautions ive taken in past is one of these plastic coated rope thingies around back wheel and secured with an abus granite u lock descended down the years from previous bikes.
What Im looking for is something long enough to attach the back wheel to a lamp post or other suitable street furniture.

Any suggestions welcome.

Have a look at an Anti Pinch Pin, there was thread a couple of days ago with photos.
I use one to a ground anchor. It would give you more scope to chain to a lamp post ect.

A Pragmasis Anti Pinch Pin inserted through the rear wheel hub with a suitable Pragmasis chain & Squires padlock will allow you to chain to a lamp post. See the thread further down the page.

I used to worry about this alot - but cant be arsed with carrying heavy chains these days, especially with a pillion and loads of luggage, if I'm with friends then they have normally got a lock and chain and are keen to chain their bike to mine :) but normally I just leave it in the hotel car park close to the front door - I try to choose my final destination hotel on the basis that it has at some form of garage or at least a private car park.

Totally agree. Who's going to nick a Beamer on a whim when they don't even have the warranty documentation as well

You will worry if you've got it on finance, didn't get gap insurance, it gets nicked and you owe £3K on a bike you no longer own and you have no bike!

If you only owe £3k on the bike, it's likely to be older and even less attractive to a potential opportunist thief! (we are not talking about regularly parked outside your house here, but one-off stops at hotels etc, which cannot be forward-planned by a thief)

This works for me too :thumb2

I always carry a decent chain (2.5m) and padlock, whilst touring

Most of the time, I never have to use it, as the hotels usually have a garage - but the odd time it does get used over a 2 week tour then I've done my best

Just sits in an Oxford lock bag on the pillion seat, when solo and is a really handy thing to carry it in to make sure the extra weight is appropriately distributed

I normally just put a notice on the screen saying the ESA is fecked, that the final drive is rumbling and that it has never been serviced by a BMW dealer. Nobody is going to want to nick it then!!

Also, +1 for the big chain and padlock :thumb

If I had it on finance then perhaps I would worry but it ain't so I don't :)

Stay in a proper hotel, and give the bell boy a couple of Euros to keep an eye on it. Or park it inside the hotel.:thumb

After my mate had his Hornet nicked last week (bolt cutters through an 11mm chain) I've just bought this beast for when I leave it in Leeds city centre through the day:

Not sure I'd take it touring though as it takes up a lot of space. Only time I've been nervous about it was Amsterdam, but the hotel were accommodating and constructed a temporary cage out of some building works around my bike! I never worry about it in the countryside areas, which is where I usually go.

Park next to a better bike/car, or get a large dog! Don't clean it when you go touring.

Agreed about Amsterdam and now Barcelona... once beautiful cities now sadly containing plenty of absolute scum.

Just back from honeymoon in Sicily minus my 2015 Gs.
Taken from outside the front door of the hotel in designated parking... Alarm, immobiliser, disc lock and chained to a pole. They were good enough to leave the locks for me although they won't be locking much any more!
3k worth of add ons too... Just flew home, sick

Obviously pro's, if they want your bike they will take it.
