I agree - the only one owner 51,000 mile, 8½ year old bike I'd sell to a friend. Some days, I really regret selling it, most days, my dodgy knee reminds me why I bought the GS instead.
If I was in a mood to sell the GSA, the bike at the top of my list would be the new Honda VFR. Its going to be in the showrooms at the end of the year and they'll be doing first deliveries for March '10. Looks a cracking bike, the only thing that would put me off would be that its a new bike (i did the new model thing with the '04 GS) - there again we're talking about Honda...................
If you definately like the adventure type of bike, then KTM have got to be fairly near the top.
I got rid of my 04 GS after getting pissed off with the reliability. Decided that I missed my GS too much, so ended buying another alongside a second bike (for reliable daily transport ).
Good luck with the decision...............extended warranty does sould like another option and I think I'd be on the phone to BMW customer services asking for it for free given the problems that you've had.
If you want to get rid of your bike you will obviously be dissuaded from doing so on this forum (and I suspect that is what you want.)
Try an 800GS, but you get what you pay for and the 800 is a lot cheaper.
I get to hear lots of 'not so good ' things about the 1200GS but so far nota bad word abouit the 1150GS ( one of which I happen to own ). Also riden a couple of 1200's and not been as impressed as I am every time I get on my 1150 so to offer an answer to your question, I say go 1150 every time.

When my VFR got written off I decided to try something different (been on VFRs for 10 years, only form of transport).
I went for a R1150GS which I thought was superb. Quite heavy but manageable for a tall guy like me and once moving is superb. Would have another tomorrow. No faults.
A year later, on a whim, I traded (not upgraded) to a 1200GS which is also excellent. Lighter, better brakes but equally awesome on the road. Also no faults.
Go for an 1150GS or GSA, they're less complicated and just as good (and look better IMHO).
