Decisions, decisions...
Doing a quick survey whether to write off my old GS or get the "new" one.
Broken bits:
Front Forks
Complete front fairing (screen, instrument bar, turn signals, mirrors, beak, front fender etc all plastics)
41L TT fuel tank
Front frame (huge freeplay on handlebar bearings and fairing+oilcooler supporting frame broken)
Oil cooler bent
Front seat
Engine guards
Exhaust pipes from cylinders collapsed
Rear frame bent
Paralever casing cracked
Complete bevel box fekked (huge freeplay on rear wheel)
Plus some other minor things:
Brake and ABS lines, rear master cyl, mechanical and electrical cables, levelers etc smaller bits
Haven't checked the alignements of both wheels and brake discs yet, also the alignment of seemingly OK telelever (forks cracked off from telelever ball joint plate with cracked four bolts leaving telelever (seemingly) OK!). All based on assumption the engine and gearbox is OK, though, haven't got chance to try them. But they may've got some "shock" damaging too. Also the condition of gearbox casing supporting the paralever with bearings is unknown, though optically seems OK.
UK-based shops i know (the ones who speak english (the German ones don't!) and can help) and have web section:
Motorworks.co.uk
Motobins.co.uk
james-sherlock.co.uk
Any more?
Did some research in those UK shops. Plus added some Touratech bits (instruments bar replacement, engine guards, some plastics - front fender). Calculated the total to around for bits: 2200-3200£ including leaving some circa 500£ reserve for later discoveries of broken things and misalignments etc.
The newest 1997-1999 R1100GS in germany cost around 5000 +/-1000 euros (£3400) including all the bits ready for secure travelling (engine guards & hard parts), except alu-luggage.
For me it looks more rational choice is to go for "new" one considering the risk i never know what microcracks and small misalignments on the old bike may occur later after the repair to get it OK (optically), so getting it written off? Or anyone with more experience on crashes recommends recover/overhauling the old one?
What do you recommend? Margus
