Hi all together!

My name ist Jörg, and i come from Germany. I´am living in Kassel in the middle of Germany. My english is totaly out of practise, sorry for that at first.

My first contact with your country i had in the 80ies, when i visited a penfriend in Leicester for some weeks twice. After that visit i travled around in Cornwall and York (highmoores, Rosedale Abby for example) with my parents, wich came over to pick me up.

In 1994 i drove to scottland by motorbike during study-vacations and visited Yorkshire and the lovley campside there again on my way back.

In 2006 me and my wife had a lovley motorbiketrip through Ireland and Northireland.

I love UK, the habitants and your way of life, so me and my wife deside to visit England by motorbike next year again. We want to go to Cornwall, Wales, and when the time allowes, mabe further on to Lake District.

Therefor, especially for South England, Devon, Cornwall and Wales, i would like to ask for some recommendations:

Do you have some "must have seen", some "must have driven", maybe even some gps-tracks for me? Could you recommend some places to stay more then one night (basiscamp), wich are predestinated to explore the area/region in different/more directions. We prefer not to move on every day, so we can leave luggage at home and come back for the night. It would be perfekt to stay 2 or 3 nights in one place/B&B. Other references?

Probably we can stay in england for about max. 14 days. We expect to arrive in Dover and have to go back there in the end again. As an old friend of scooters and Quadrophenia, i decide to travel via Brighton and see some nice places south-england too. I think, the time last max. for Cornwalland Wales. Lake District will be to much, in my opinion. What do you think?

Thank you a lot for your ideas!

Greetings

Jörg

Jorg,

I hope you are able to take in all those places during your trip. For me personally you should include a ride from Weston Super Mare to Lynton and Lynmouth via Porlock Hill. I would then follow the coast road called the Atlantic Highway right down into Cornwall.

Depending upon the time of year and your budget, I would stay near Falmouth and if money is not a major issue, stay at the Nare Hotel on the Roseland Peninsula.

I live in Cornwall and can suggest several places for you to visit but can also offer to ride with you and take you places if you would like to when you come over.

Places to visit just of the top of my head in cornwall
Porthtowan, perranporth, Mavagissy, falmouth, constantine, marazion, St.Ives, LAnds end the list is endless

Joerg I sent you a long PM but I see you have chosen not to receive them and I cant retype it all again here

Well enjoy Cornwall but avoid the tourist traps .i.e. St Ives, Mevagissy,Newquay to name a few, and unless you are into surfing some of the beach resorts, Porthreath, Porthtowan, Perranporth.

Quiet places such as the Lizard, Lands Ends and I dare to say Mousehole although can be a bit touristy in the summer but May should be quiet enough.

North cornwall from Newquay to Padstow on the coast road is classically scenic. Also from St.Ives to Lands End is another classic coast route. The back roads from the Lizard via Gweek, Port Navas, Mawgan Smith on to Falmouth give you an experience of south cornwall coast if a little narrow. Also if you are into literature you pass "French Mens Creek."

But these routes to be enjoyed do take a few hours.

I like Sennen to the B3306 to St Ives coast road but there are so many fantastic roads and places to visit, If I were you I would take Jason up on his offer of a ride out. whilst your in the area.

I hope you enjoy your time in Cornwall and Wales. Have a good time and dont forget the :beerjug:

At first: Happy New Year @ all!

And much thanks for the answers! I will mark all your places and ways in my map and will see, if i could take it in my route.

When i know the date, we`ll arrive, i will let know you, maybe you find the time, to drive some miles with us.

By the way, what do you think, is it a good idea to spend some time on isle of wight on our way to cornwall. or dosent it differ to the rest of south england/devon/cornwall and we should sve the time for other routes?

Steve, the hotel and place looks great! But i want have some money last for the fuel ;-). But we will see, maybe we go there for a short stay.

That´s one of the reasons to come to uk! I love your pubs, bitter and stouds, my wife prefers lager...! And i read now about real ale, i have never tried yet, because i didnt´d see in 80ies and 90ies. Sounds very good!

Agree with all said about Cornwall,
St Ives is a bit of a tourist trap but very pretty and I like the Tate Modern and Barbara Hepworth museum if a bit of culture is your thing. In May it shouldn't be too crowded.

As already said the back road along the coast from St Ives to Sennen is fantastic.Forget Lands End but visit Cape Cornwall near St Just.

For camping look at Treen near St Buryan, great site + Logan Rock Inn for proper beer and good food.

See you out there!

try the Lizard

Try Henry's camp site on the Lizard, walking distance to the Pub, beaches, cafe's etc and a great site:beerjug::beerjug:

Hi I live on a farm just outside ST ives, hopefully will be in my new place on the farm by the end of this month. So if you want to have somewhere to stop for free. Feel free to visit, you can have the main bedroom as I have a couple of sofa beds as well.

Always happy to welcome visitors.

Hi all together!

Last year we could not manage to do the tour, but now we are nearly on the road with one year delay.

We will arrive next friday in Dover, coming from Calais by ferry. Arrival time 13.05 p.m.. Riding to Brighton to spend there the first night in the White house and Going further on next day to Dartmoore. There we will spend two nights in North Bovey, Gate House. Following days we will see. May be we will see some of you on the road. Watch out for a yellow 1200 adventure from Germany!

Yours

Jörg

It depends what you're looking for. Cornwall offers some stunning coastal scenery, but inland's somewhat windswept and drab, much akin to the IOW (IMHO). As stated, Treen has a super campsite and the well known traveller, Tiffany Coates, lives next door in Porthcurno, where you'll also find The Minack Theatre. I live down in Devon which, along with Dorset, i find far more scenic with more interesting roads to ride and things to see. Take the advice of people on here on where to visit/stay, and compare their recommendations with Tripadvisor to find places to stay and eat. From personal experience, avoid hotels and restaurants in the UK, best quality and value come from B&B's, Pubs with B&B's and Pubs with Restaurants. A good source for B&B's can be found at Farm Stays.

You've also picked a great place to stay at North Bovey and i suggest you book in at The Ring Of Bells for your evening meals. I'm away working that weekend, so won't be able to pop up to Bovey and have a pint with you both. Have a great trip.

Heading West from Brighton, first go North and pick up the A272 to Winchester. If you need to save time heading over to Devon you're then best heading North to pick up the A303. This will give you the opportunity to see Bakerman. Wear your helmets into the shop and you should receive a cup of tea. Ask if Steve's available and make yourselves known. Best purchases in the shop are the chocolate orange danish and his sausage rolls. After that, just head West till you reach Exeter and take the B3212, via Ide, onto the moor.
If you have more time head from Bakermans to Salisbury and pick up the old A30 and head all the way West on this road. Doing this will show you some lovely parts of England, taking you through some lovely towns and scenery, avoiding a lot of the enforced speed limits that have appeared on a lot of the other routes in this area.
