Picking up a new to me GSA at the weekend - would like to do a better job of protecting this one than I did the last GSA. What recommendations do you have for protecting the bike from year round abuse? Crud catchers? Frame protecting from rubbing? Corrosion prevention?

And nope, not interested in anyone trying to convince me that an 1150 would be a better purchase :blagblah

Protection bits I've fitted to mine are

Fender Extender
Wunderlich crud catcher
Mudsling
Touratech frame guards
Evotech radiator guards
Evotech shaft protector

3M ventureshield on the shaft & parts of the frame where you use zip ties.

If you're taking it off-road regularly, get some machine art xheads, and some header protection:thumb

For corrosion protection, use FS365 before every ride in the winter (it takes less than a minute to cover the bike) and rinse the bike off after any days of riding on salty roads.

I've fitted the MachineArt Moto Mudsling and AvantGuard, which are excellent quality. I've also fitted their X-Head protectors.

I've fitted the Touratech Final Drive guard, which is vulnerable in a drop, don't ask how I know! :blast

I put 3M blade tape on the bits of the frame that are likely to come into contact with my boots.

Touratec radiator guards and lastly the Touratech headlight protector.

I'm very happy with the fit and finish of all the parts and their ease to fit.

Mudsling and Avant fender extender. Heli tape on centre stand cross brace. DynaxUC all over engine and metal parts once before winter. ACF50 occasionally on top. That's it for me. Bike is a commuter so all year round use. Zero issues with corrosion.

Thanks all - good recommendations for the extenders and was always impressed with Machinemart head protectors on the HP :thumb2 As to the tape - any links for where to source that from? I have it on the HP, in nice thin strips and it's been great.

Was it this picture that made you do it:P

Welcome to the lc section;)

It was the ability with which I could make my one crop circles with one ;)

It's gonna be a contrast to the HP, but I'm looking forward to abusing it, and seeing if I can get this one to 100k miles too!

They look good, but the X-heads would be a better option, as they come with a rubber buffer between the heads and the guard.

The close fitting Touratec engine guards come with rubber buffers between them and the covers too and are a lot better looking than that contraption above!
And better looking than the Xhead plastic ones too imho

Most of what's already been said... it's mostly going to be protection against damage from a drop or low speed crash and stuff to prevent corrosion. And depends what you want to do with it, the more off road the more protection you might want. Do you have the BMW aluminium panniers? You might want to cover them, they're notorious. If you upgrade to a bigger screen you might need screen strengthening brackets.

Most mods are just bling IMO, the bike is fine without any of it but there's nothing wrong with personalising your bike with farkles, I have a fair bit myself. If you want real protection consider theft and invest in an a ground anchor, chain and cover. I use a Hardie ground anchor, a 1.5m Almax Immobiliser 3 (16mm) chain and Pragmssis anti-pinch pin plus a couple of disc locks and a cover. Perhaps think about a tracker and alarm of some sort too.

protection.

Do not take it outside. keep it a temperature controlled room, dont even start it. Just look at it and you will be ok.
Suggest you buy a £1200 hack and keep the bmw for dry sunny local trips to the shop.

Stand protector

Theres also the rugged roads centre stand protector

Mine's black but the same as this! Not only protects the stand but I think also deflect some crud off the bottom of the bike!

Those head protectors cost more than one replacement head.....and when you scratch one , you'll need to buy two more :augie

Amazes me how much we spend in the first place on these bikes and then feel we need to/have to spend more. Why can't the cylinder heads have some sort of protection factory fitted in the first place? Why should I have to pay £600 for comfortable seats? Why did I buy it?
