Just a quick question, would anybody recommend the best place to get a recon alternator for my 1150GSA?

I am located in Berkshire.

Many thanks

I had one done many years ago at a place on the Slough Trading Estate, Company called Quick start.

Don't know if they are still about

Purely for my interest, what's happened to yours?

It has suddenly started making a racket, (just had the belt changed about 300 miles ago)

Maybe recon my old one might be an idea, as its charging fine just the noise is worrying and I am off to Ireland for the NW200:blast

Noise

What sort of noise?, if it's a squealing noise that is the belt being sightly loose.

Belt too loose and it starts to squeal, belt too tight and the bearing in the alt can fail.

So check the tension.
Rule of thumb is when you can barely twist the belt by hand to a 90 degree angle, you're good.

Another thing is the 1150 GSA can have 2 different lengths of belts, did you get the correct one?
Compare to the old.

Up to a certain frame nr it is the short belt, from another frame nr it is the longer one, the numbers in between are suspicious and not even known by Herr BMW himself.

Paul.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies, it has been diagnosed by a bike mechanic (no names mentioned) its the bearing that's at fault.

Didn't know who would be best sherlocks, Motorworks or someone else. Just don't want a new one from BMW.

There is a few on fleabay so think I will find out my part number and go from there.

:D

Not close to you, but I use these people for general auto electrical stuff

http://www.rsautosparks.com/

I spoke to them about rebuilding the GS starter motor and alternator if I ever needed them doing and they said it wouldn't be a problem.
