On my motorbike travels I have the habit of keeping the GPS track recording on (actually, I keep this on at all times).
When I come back from vacation I do generally group all the tracks, as those are segmented by power on/off periods, merge them together and archive them as a "full trip" recording.

Proved useful over the years.

I do this with both my GPSs, an XT and GPSMap 64s. Only issue is that the 64 doesn't segment the tracks, and if you switch it off, say in Wales at the bottom of mount snowdon where you hiked, and turn it on a week after and use it to greenlane on the motorbike in Surrey, it will treat that as a single recording with massive "jumps" around the place. Ask me how I know :D

Anyway, to my question: I want to record (more interesting) trips by car.
While in the car I generally use Waze, and then OSMAnd if I want to follow specific routes, but I cannot record the tracks (not sure if OSMAnd does that) and I also jump between the two during the trip.
Keeping the 64s somewhere running in the car is not a good idea as it will take space, doesn't last forever on battery, and the aforementioned issue with not segmenting recordings.

Not sure if there are apps that do this, but I'd rather use a separate device.
Does the Beeline Moto 2 record tracks if left running to its own devices (I'm trying to find an excuse to buy one to be fair)?
Are there any other small devices that track only (and can maybe be powered by the car via USB)?
Not sure if the car's onboard navi (BMW iDrive, older version) does this. I actually never used the onboard navigation system as even just inputting an address is a chore.

One point for MRA then.
Does it do it automatically? As, I start it in the morning and keeps going till end of day or when I stop it?

I know I said I don't like it... but I'll try it again as I was considering getting the lifetime subscription as it might be very useful to embed the track on web, etc.

Even when not on a route/trip/guidance the XT records your journey. Keep that somewhere in the car with a power source and it'll track your route, and categorise it by day/time.

This video may help- it is clearly explained and easy to follow.
Setup => Tracks +> choices record/not record/ record & show on map / + your choice of track colour
Time intervals can be selected as can distance
Choices of Auto archive => least often to most often
Save daily is useful- you can always join tracks later on Etc. or save when full
As with most problems- it is usually down to a choice of settings in the unit which does not correspond with your wishes.

Thanks. I know how to record tracks with both devices, XT/64 as I do it regularly both with and without active routes.
That also leads to some interesting data visualisation if I enable the entire database on Basecamp, around where I live :D

I was trying to find a convenient solution to record while in the car (and not using those two devices).
So far, either OSMAnd or MRA in background recording for the day seem to be a possible solution.

I'd rather not have the extra hardware (the GPS) in the car as there is not a massive amount of space.

(This also means I have to find other excuses to myself to buy a Beeline)

If you have a smart watch why not use the track me function to create a route that way? I know on my Garmin it creates a GPX file when i use this functionality.

And easy to activate/switch off when in a vehicle and entering/leaving a good stretch of road.

Yes, that does record a track too. Just hit the record button
