Because it's an aircooled engine and sat idling to reach 3 bars on the gauge with no passing airflow to cool the engine, was top muppetry

What you did was very bad................

exhaust gases - it's what happens when a spark is introduced to volotile mixture of flammable liquid and air -

another word that springs to mind is combustion

Ooooooh, naughty, you're not supposed to run 'em on the stand for any length of time, says so in the owners manual. Take it for a sshort run to thin the oil before doing a change.

They get soooo hot they'll eventually catch fire if you walk off an leave 'em. There was a thread on Advrider a while ago from some guy whose bike did just that, started 'er up and went in to put on his helmet etc, came out and she was burnt to a crisp. He posted pix of it, a sorry sight. Then he claimed against BWM who said tough, RTFM, mate :(

Why would you let your engine warm up on the center stand if you want to doe a proper oil level check?

Just go for a ride, pull it on the center stand, pet the dog, say hi to the kids, make coffee and look if the level is somewhere near the dot. It's not rocket sience isn't it?

hmmm my R80/7 got red hot pipes while I was ridding it one night.....how it amused me when I noticed the down pipes glowing when I was miles from home  kept going and it seemed fine....never did get to the bottom of it......now a modern BM..it'd just die ;)

Thanks for taking the flak

Thanks for making me more informed via the feedback Alan. :soapbox:

I, like you I am still nervous about abusing my baby as well as being told off by other parents - still this is a very inexpensive way of getting some valuable reminders of do's and don'ts and I bet there are others who are grateful too.
