Red Kite Rally - regulations available

if you saw two odd people waving and clapping
I saw a couple of people clapping but I was toooooo scared to let go of the bars to wave back....nice thought though!
Just to reiterate what I have PM'd Bob earlier...FEKIN' EXCELLENT EVENT!

A GSer lives to tell the story!

I did the Red Kite rally on a GS, and survived!:D

Well done to Bob & crew for putting on a great event. All your hard work is much appreciated. :beerjug:

Despite what Bob may say, I reckon this event was tougher for big bikes than the Cambrian last autumn. The Cambrian course was largely on a grippy gravel/stone surface, with none of the slippery grass/mud that had us GS riders cursing in places at the Red Kite. There were times when I wished I was on my pogo-stick, or better yet in the bar. Still, the Red Kite was certainly a challenge, and more rewarding in that respect. Come to think of it, if it was all easy it wouldn't have been half the fun it was, and soft ground won't hurt the bike or rider when you fall on it (as we all did).

I found the second lap surprisingly much easier going than the first - the ground dried out a lot in the sun giving much better grip on the grass/mud sections. I was really enjoying myself by this time. In fact the only time I dropped the bike on the 2nd lap was in the special stage - typical!

I'm reminded of those fools/heros who do things like the London marathon. Immediately afterwards everyone says "never again", but the pain is quickly forgotten and you can't help having another go next year.

Thanks to those who came to cheer us on, post photos if you can.

Ian

A chap who stopped to say hello and also to look for a "noise" his bike was making :)

Cheerful chappie giving us a wave

It's hard to see what's going on here, but in fact it's some guy going the wrong way :D

My girlfriend was speculating to me that trail riding is a "boy's sport", and the next thing we knew this very cheerful young lady stopped to say hello. The next thing my gf said to me was "I want a trail bike" :D

Some riders having a conference in the middle of the road. The guy on the right had broken his bike, we had a little chat with him as he waited for recovery.

Finally, look at the state of the road! All that mud! :D

A group of us finished a "road rideout" at Llandovery at about the same time lots of competitors from the Rally were heading back towards Llandovery, got a lot of waves and nods we passed them:cool:
I had a chat with a mate last night ( a lurker on here) who marshalled at the Rally,he told the tale of a guy on an 04 GS Adv who dropped it a couple of times:rolleyes: set fire to his rear brakes:rolleyes: cart wheeled into water:rolleyes: hydrauliked the motor  and shagged his starter motor trying to pump water:rolleyes: I'm told he seemed to be enjoying himself, despite having no brakes whatsoever "since the fire" and actually finished the event, anyone from here?
What's your version?

Twas me and my GS U-boat....only one lap though and then a 200 mile limp home....still laughing :D .

2 wheel humvee, you're mate must be Andy "I've got a GS now". He was actually the Chief Marshal for the event. I could tell you a few stories of his exploits, ask him about his ride back to the finish at the Cambrian Rally last year :o

I did wonder where Chris went on the second lap, was just told his back brake had caught fire and he had retired

Paul Blezard was there on an 1100GS with a telescopic front fork conversion, and he was very impressed with it. It's being developed by a very experianced GS'er / professional bike technician and is likely to become available as a mod in the near future.

There are lots of pictures at http://www.ukoffroad.info/webrk/index.htm

Bob,you are correct about the identity of the Marshall-he's a lurker here now he's got a GS,but he's too shy to post:rolleyes:
