REDUCTION IN THE DRINK DRIVE LIMIT

With effect from 0001hrs on Friday 5 December 2014 legislation will be enacted to reduce the drink drive limit in Scotland. The new limits will be as follows:

• Breath – 22 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath;
• Blood – 50 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood; and
• Urine – 67 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine.
 
Another masterpiece of political points scoring that will in all probability have zero effect on accident rates, injuries and deaths.

Meanwhile the 9 out of 10 accidents that don't involve drink/drive scenarios will continue to occur due to driver incompetence, stupidity, ignorance and pure selfishness.
 
I don't drink if I'm driving anyway so not an issue for me personally.

Yup, true.

And the fact that there's near to zero actual traffic policing anymore.

Driving through Birmingham yesterday I saw two lads 2 up on a '14 reg trail bike, on L plates,

Zipping along, neither wearing helmets, obviously not bothered one bit...

Then a car went through a red light so the passenger could film 'em on his phone!
 
Following on from point above re zero actual traffic policing, how is a change in the limit going to change statistics if there are still so few to do the testing :nenau

As usual - they always trot out the family of some youngster who was killed by a knobber who was 5 times over the limit ...........

The family, who feel that their child's death must "mean something" - endorse the reduction with "This will greatly reduce the number of drink-drivers" :blast

No reporter/interviewer has the balls to question their logic on camera...........

Two things - changing it to Zero.......... is surely more "fecking about" :nenau

and..... Zero is just another limit, of no more significance than any limits currently in place throughout the world.

I believe that you can naturally have low levels of alcohol in your system, one of the significant problems with a zero figure.
 
A load of bollocks

As someone who is strictly teetotal, it has to be said that lowering the drink/drive limit will, in all probability, have no effect whatsoever on the death and injury rate.
It will, however, result in the criminalisation of a significant number of otherwise law abiding people.
Maybe I have the shitty end of the stick, but in my experience, two points come to mind:

First of all, it is no longer socially acceptable to drink and drive.

Second, those who drive when pissed out of their brains will always do so, regardless of where the limit is set. These are, generally, the people who cause a significant proportion of the carnage on our roads. A lower Drink/Drive limit will not deter them, since they ignore all such limits anyway.

I totally agree. I reckon over 90% of the drivers who had been drinking that I breathalysed as a result of an RTA or driving offence, were well over the limit.
 
Perhaps those that like a bottle of wine with their dinner should have to take a test with a specified level of alcohol in their system. If they drive better than most of the clowns on the road do sober they can get a special "10 unit" licence.

I think I'll sign up for the half bottle of 50% whisky licence.

I'm sure it would all work out perfectly.

Distract the electorate from the real issues such as a failing Scottish NHS, and the knowledge that plummetting oil revenues upon which the SNP based the fantasies they failed to fool the nation with, would now leave them with an 8.7 BILLION shortfall.

:beerjug: Will this change anything? NO. You only have to watch any of these police programmes to see that knobs who are banned from driving, STILL DRIVE.
A few months ago a couple on a tandem were mown down and killed here in Bristol, by a wanker who has been banned from driving three times.
Some people just don't give a shit about bans!
