I'm getting peed off with this now and it should be easy.

I've got a Brother MFC 3420C, a nice multi function fax/scanner/printer...it works very well but the black ink is out.

The cartridges don't have chips on them so I can't see how the printer still thinks the one I've just refilled is 'empty' as it's reporting...when I stick the refilled ink in, it asks me if I've removed it (yes) and if I've replaced with new (yes) but it still comes up as empty.

The cartridge has a bar code on it but there's no reader next to the thing as I can see, so wtf is goin on???

Anyone got any tips please?????

Air bubbles? Take the cartridge out and try tapping it gently for a few seconds.

hmm...I did leave it sitting upside down to let the pressure equalize a bit before putting it in so I don't think there are any in there....

I've been using these people for ages and had no problems (that's buggered it now then :D )
Ditto. Great company.

Excellent...thanks very much Lee, have orderd a load :thumb

I'm still interested as to why my refilled one wouldn't work though ;)

If you really let it get low it may have reached the point where it neeed to be primed to get ink down to the pipe to the jet. I don't think you can gravity prime these, they need pressure or suction. It may also be that if it got too low the jet just got blocked up with dried and cooked pigment.

You may note that I'm guessing here
