One of the bolts holding the centre stand on my '06 1200GS broke on Tuesday. Initially I didn't realise and rode 20 miles with the spring forcing the foot of the stand onto the sidewall of the rear tyre - noticed some jarring when braking which made me think there was something wrong with the ABS. Had to call the AA to remove the stand and fix it to the passenger seat with zip ties for my ride home.

This is the second time it has happened in 6k miles but our friends in Battersea will not replace it under warranty as the 2 year warranty on the repair ran out 2 months ago.

So I am going to refit it myself rather than paying them £50 in labour. The friendly people at Rainbow are sending me the new nut and bolt (not the technical name I’m sure) which should arrive today or tomorrow.

Has anyone fitted the stand themselves? Is it a straight forward job for a numpty like me? I helped the AA guy remove the second bolt and disconnect the spring so I guess it is a simple case of putting on one bolt, then the spring and then the other bolt but is there anything I need to be aware of, or any trick that will make it an easier and faster job? Do I need to apply any grease or oil, and if so, to which part?

As you can tell I am not very mechanically minded, but I’m determined to get to know my GS and avoid lining the pockets of dealers for simple jobs.

Cheers

It's a very simple and straight forward job. I did mine a couple of months ago in about 10 minutes. If I recall, I had to fit one bolt, then connect the springs then fit the second bolt. Tighten the bolts and bob's yer uncle.

Just offer it up and you'll see how easy it is but you might find it a bit of a faff with the springs.......persevere :thumb

Should be a PoP.
Only extra advice would be to use some thin cable to help you stretch the springs (I rescued some from the opening mechanism of an up-and-over garage door). You can loop over the end of the spring and use a spanner or something else in the end you hold as a tee bar. Makes pulling the spring (stretching) much easier and controlable.

Not sure of the centre stand but with my sidestand I stretched the spring out (actually before removal) and inserted lots of coins into the coil. After refitting it was just a case of removing the coins with pliers, if you see what I mean

Centre stand springs are located on a bracket with a long bolt. Leave the bolt loose, hook springs on and then tighten the bolt. Easy

ah, I'm encouraged by the use of words like easy and PoP :thumb2

Thanks for all the advice, I'll give it a go and see how I get on. Will probably take me all Saturday afternoon and cost me some knuckle skin but nothing tried...:blagblah.

I have some shiney new Torx drivers which are itching to see some action.

:thumb Great tip. I'd forgotten that one :blast

Did mine a couple of weeks ago using the coin trick, 20p's work best - a doddle to do, took no time at all and no skinned knuckles!

The coin trick sounds excellent - why didn't I think of that :blast

I did mine a few weeks ago and the spring issue was the only faff.

Take bolts out and remove stand and springs

Replace stand with new bolt/s

Easiest way I found to replace springs (especially the big bugger) was to put the lower end in place, attach a key ring fob to the top with a tow line or similar through it- then get SWIMBO / A.N.Other to pull from a distance while you guide the top end over the peg :thumb2

the line can then be unthreaded and the key ring fob either left there or taken off.
