Reflective stickers compulsory on helmets in France?

I went to Le Mans for the Moto GP last year & Plod pulled every motorcyclist leaving the motorway to one side to check paperwork etc.
I don't recall any helmets with reflective stickers on (mind I wasn't looking for them) & I certainly haven't stickered mine up & none of us were fined to the best of my knowledge, certainly I wasn't.

That said I do wear a full High Viz jacket, with reflective strips sewn in. Maybe that cut me some slack?

On the other hand maybe the French police are facing cuts in these times of austerity & have decided to start invoking this old rule as a way of increasing revenue?

I guess the next few weeks will tell us more as we all come out of hibernation & start heading Sous La Manche.

It would be good to hear any anecdotal evidence before I head that way in late May.

Any chance Wapping & co could find a gendarme on their forthcoming trip & all start waving their helmets at him to see how he responds........

That is probably closer to the truth than people realise.

My advise FWIW, stick some in your pocket and, if stopped, do the "I've only just managed to get some officer"

France - Reflective stickers

Hi Guys

I'm Off to France and Germany in a couple of weeks and have bought a Hi-Viz jacket to go over my bike jacket whilst i'm riding..looking on the internet now it looks like that ruling has been postponed. so one less garment to wear however I will keep one on the top box in case of emergencies'.

There appears to be no definitive answer on the web to what you need to comply with or take, even my insurance company can not help there as they have no idea - so they say. can anyone clear this up?

I know they are cracking down (so the web says and giving out big fines) on helmet's having the stupid 4 reflective stickers on them, is this a requirement now? Just don't want to look like a crash test dummy when I'm driving alone the road

I am off to alps next week, i had some stickers made by a sign company, they are going to stick the reflective super sticky on to not so sticky backing so i can get them off if i want cant be bothered to explain to french cops why i have not got them fitted, pays ya money takes ya choice

AFAIK, this has been the law since the year dot.

And so widely ignored that none of my french biking compadres knew what the hell I was talking about.

Gawd,not the return of the helmet sticker thread again.

The requirement for the four reflective helmet stickers was for French nationals,not for foreign visitors.
It dates back over twenty five years,and the fitment of stickers fell into decline when manufacturers wised up to just putting a sheet of them in the helmet box and having a multiple country sellable helmet rather than a dedicated French market only helmet.
Naturally most of the stickers weren`t getting fitted by purchasers,and the 'proposed law' was nothing more than an attempt to uphold an existing one.
It`s nothing new and it didn`t...and doesn`t...apply to us.

thanks for the quick replies. I have been touring now for a few years and this is the first time I have heard of this hence my earlier posting..so sorry to cover old ground.

Sounds like I just dont need to worry. so off i will go and enjoy the alps..way hey.
