Are Reg tool and other similar programmes worth paying for? Do they do anything in terms of safeguarding and speeding up your computer that you can't do yourself through defragging etc.?:type

What do you want your computer to be faster at?

IMHO, if you *need* a significantly faster computer you go out and but whatever the magazines say is the fastest computer.

Backups, however, are a given. Buy an external drive and use the built in backup software.

Download Cclean it's free and shit hot..
will clean the reg and all the unwanted shite.

re-install windows from scratch. i wouldn't waste my time trying to clean up an old* install by any method. IME it never works well.

*anything over about a year for a power user, 2 maybe 3 for a lighter user.

I do this every few months or so. As cookie says, it's the only method I've found to get the PC back up to speed again. Keeping an image of a new install with your essential programs in can speed the process up no end.
