Registry for DVD-RW

OK, I can change a plug and a fuse, but this one's outside my envelope!

My DVD writer isn't working. When I say that, I think the hardware is fine and according to the Device Manager troubleshooter all is well, but I suspect the Registry entry for this device is up the pictures.

What do I do?

IDE devices are detected at each boot up. surely a registry entry is made then.

what are the symptoms of it "not working"? why do you think the hardware is fine?

i suspect it's knackered as device manager can see it ok, they don't seem to last long. i noticed one of my cd writers throwing up errors this morning. 331 buffer underun errors while burning one disc, not long for this world. ho hum

have you got a known good unit you could swap it with? simple operation that would identify hardware or software fault.

Check the manufacturer's web site and install the latest drivers......if you have the latest already, uninstall the software, unplug the writer, install the software again and plug it in.

Surprising how often this works .

i should give that a go. i've never installed drivers for a dic drive yet, just use whatever windows dishes out

PS I didn't say, but it's an integrated device - does that make any difference?

Only that you'll need to open the case to unplug the ribbon cable (or power cable) when you reboot after uninstalling it in control panel>system>device manager.

Once rebooted without it showing, re do the drivers then shut down the pc, replug it in and start up again.

that's a good idea. i'm assuming you mean to flash the dvd-rw with the new firmware, and not update the BIOS which is in a chip on the motherboard, though you could do that as well.

if you're using the latest generation of discs, they have a new dye technology that sometimes will not work with anything but the latest firmware.

Ouch. If you suspect a specific registry value should be something else, be very careful, and make sure you have a damn good reason for changing it BEFORE you touch it. If you just have a vague feeling it might be the registry, stay well clear. Pressing the wrong button in the registry editor can totally trash your computer. If someone's just made a vague comment that "it might be the registry", don't ever trust anything they say ever again.

The only reason I suspect the registry is that I had a similar symptom fault whilst the PC was within its warranty period. The manufacturer's helpline asked me to look at some registry values and found that something had, somehow, changed.

I will not make any changes unless I have a real expect looking over my shoulder!!

flashed the firmware on my dodgy samsung & it's revitalised the old thing

won't be multi region any more but i don't need that anymore with this

I still haven't sorted this, but have worked through the problem with the PC manufacturer.

Having reinstalled the driver several times, they were also looking towards the registry as the problem - with their help a couple of files were removed (Upper/lower filter values - whatever they do???).

This morning I've opened iTunes for the first time in and it flags a message saying that registry values have changed - often happens when other programs share the CD/DVD writer.

Now it occurs to me that I've only had the problem with the DVD writer since I upgraded iTunes last week to v6.0.1.3.

Any further thoughts?
