I would be really grateful for some advice on the following issue. A relay failed on my motorbike (2009 BMW XCountry) and I replaced it with a standard relay, incorrectly believing that all relays are the same…

I have been experiencing parasitic drain from the battery, and it is related to the side stand (now bypassed) or neutral switch. I now realise that the original relay has a diode in series on pin 85 (with a resistor between 85 and 86) whereas the standard relay I fitted does not. The original relay was made by TE (Tyco) part number 4-1414992-3 (see diagram). I can’t seem to find the relay or anything similar (UK). Also, on the wiring diagram, where is the “diode” between the neutral and side stand switch located (as per wiring diagram)

My query is, if I can find the same original relay, can I fit a diode externally to the diode in series in the wire to pin 85 and continue to use a standard relay? If so what type of diode do I need. I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance. Pictures are original (correct) relay, the relay diagram from the original manufacturer, and the bikes wiring diagram.

1st you need to check with someone more knowledgeable than me.

Look at this one
It does have 2 '87' blades and I am guessing one could be broken off if surplus/won't fit??
Note the word 'guessing'

Finally resolved my issue. I fitted a diode externally but the parasitic draw was still there...I spent quite a bit of time studying the wiring diagrams and checking things with my multimeter and realised the relay was permanently on! I then checked the wiring and it looks like the previous owner but one had re-wired the relay with a new block connector but had switched the wires around, which is why it was on all the time. I cut out the block connector and wired the relay correctly and all is good.

I've had the bike for three years and done 20k miles and it's been fantastic, but the time has come to sell as I am looking to get a bigger bike that my wife can ride pillion, as whilst the Xcountry is a great bike it is a bit cramped for two!
