This is true, but there are stilla few things that owners can do to try to overcome the problems.
I'd recommend a liberal dose of ACF50 or waxoyl to the more afflicted pieces (some fasteners, for example), and also suggest opening up the rear light and doing the same in there (this did not stop my own light unit from disintegrating, but might have slowed it).
You then ought to be careful using WD40 on the switches (it can cause the protective boots to perish), should stick some gaffer tape on the frame where your boot will rub through the paint, and so on.
A few hours preparation and attention when you take ownership is possibly more critical on the GS than on some other bikes.
