I like my 07RT plenty but do find it a bit odd in that I change gear more on an R12RT than any previous boxer... I think that maybe a remap wouldgive it a bit more driveability as FI BM's are usually lean as standard and the evidence on Hilltop remaps seems to be proof positive fo this...

I would want to leave the cat on and keep the bike standard apart from a remap... Has anyone experience they can give...?

The bike is a 45k mile + example that has probably had a semi sheltered life...:)

....are you testing your justification for spending £350 on your bike with us first before you try giving that explanation to SWMBO?

If yes, then I think it needs a bit more work
If no, it's not a really good reason and will not alter the amount of gear changes you do but who needs a good reason

The alternative is spend the £350 on a cheap 125cc 2 stroke Enduro bike to remind yourself what changing gears a lot really is

Mine's standard other than the re-map. It's worth the money for a number of reasons but not to cut down on the number of gear changes.

Mine's on 60k and has always felt like it needed to be worked hard to make rapid progress.

Hey, it was late, i was tired... explanation was a bit shite...:)

What i meant was.... Fair enough the bike is higher geared and more powerful that earlier RT's but I find it a bit breathless and not as balanced than be when cornering at medium /higher speeds... Since I bought it in December I have ridden 90% of the days bar the shitest of shite weather and perhaps I need a few better days to judge it... I have had a fair few bikes like you have and have covered plenty of miles... Perhaps the seat/arse feedback will be the decider...

I have chipped a handful of bikes and they have usually been far better to ride... Its more to do with remaps on a standard R12 rather than one blinged up with the rest of the crap...:)

IMO you'll not regret getting a hilltop remap - it's a tad expensive but once you're over having sunk £350 into the bike you'd not want it without a remap.

I had a cracking fast x country ride home this afternoon, the fueling is lovely with a remap

Cheers... The feedback on the net seems to be very good for Hilltop and TBH the £350 is not much if it makes the bike much sharper... Stangely enough, the RT has a slow puncture so I had the old 11GS out today... the weather was kinder and I had a crack hooning into work... The 11 has the old chip tune of one of John from Greece's versions and even though it is standard bar that, its a "good" one...

I had an 11GS in the early 2000's that had a Superchip dyno rechip and even though the figures were not massively different for a already altered bike, the overall driveability was much better... It's a shame that legislation seems to produce compromised engine tunes on so many vehicles these days....

I like the 12RT and a little FI tweak will probably finish the job...:)

An update for you...

I have had the ECU remapped via return post as Geoff at Hilltop reckoned this would be 99% fine... Posted from Shetland Wednesday back Friday... Refitted and now 150+ miles down the road... The bike is totally standard apart from the remap and the difference is very good...

The bike was fine before hand with no rough running/surging/cutting out etc but was vague on the slight throttle especially in the higher gears and didn't have much go below 3.5 k where a minipowerband started... It was fine but made for far more gear changes at 60-80mph and didn't balance on a light throttle mid corner.

It is now noticably stronger above 3 k revs and more linear so making 5/6th gear running far easier and the whole engine response is much more like a 1200 twin should be... It can also be ridden on low loads down to 2k without the vibes or struggles of before and is much more like a complete bikeThe throttle now respond to much smaller inputs and has far greater "feel"

Obviously I could go the whole hog and get the intake and exhaust less restrictive and get more power but I don't need it and thats not what RT's are really for... So that is the arse/seat interface feedback for any doubters... I ride all year/ all weathers and have covered 1/2 mill miles + on many bikes so know what I want the bike to be like... The guys service is excellent and no-one would ever know there was a difference visually... And the difference makes the bike far better to ride...

MPG seems to be unchanged at present...

Dyno's give you a picture of the output but the ride is what matters the most and even when i had a bike Superchipped 15 years ago, the rides between dyno runs where the deciding factor on which tune to go with...

If you don't think you need it then don't do it but if you do its well worth the money and bother... I obviously removed the ECU and it took 1 1/2 hours either way...

PS 100 miles with a pillion yesterday and its a completely different bike two up... top marks etc and now I have an RT that covers all the bases very well...:thumb

I'll re post one of the tests we ran back in 2012 regarding remapping of two near identical R1200RT's, one was a 2005 the other a 2006.

"During a ride around Kielder Water Patto and I agreed to swap bikes so we could both see the difference between a mapped and unmapped machine. During the ride we kept in touch continually with Bluetooth headsets. What Patto found while riding those winding back roads was my remapped bike was running often one and sometimes two gears higher than I was following immediately behind. Patto was clearly enjoying himself with the additional power and torque, me, not so much, I was having to use the gearbox much more to keep up :-("
