i have just read the words remote aerial somewhere on this site.
so come on folks tell thick dave ere, what exactly dose it do?

Powered - so usually much better gain.
Remote - so you can place it for the best view of the sky, which isn't always where you mount the gpsr.

I have a 4 pin round plug garmin one in the car that I'll be taking out soon.

If it’s an amplified Antenna then it could help you keep locked to the satellites while riding under tree cover. Personally, I’ve never felt it that necessary on the bike.
Unfortunately I do need to use one in the car because the metalized screen makes a complete mess of reception.

I lost satellite reception far more often using the Nav II (2610) than when I was using the SPIII.

That said, I'd positioned the NavII on a Migsel mount above the speedo, so if I was heading north I was shielding it more than the handlebar mounted SPIII.

Fitting a remote (unpowered) antenna improved the situation a lot. I fitted mine under the black plastic 'beak cover' on my Adv.

I've got a remote aerial .

...............its in london.

I have got a spare remote antenna - BNC socket (SPIII/176/276) with magnetic base

...its not in London :D

PS
All of the remote antennas have a preamplifier in them so even if you mount them where your current aerial is you still get a stronger signal.
