Looking for a way out
Just seen the rather neat handlebar mounted remote for a 2610 in my new touratech catalogue :D
I was wondering, if I could find a small TV IR replacement remote that could 'learn', I could stick it on my handlebars and have a zoom in/out function etc, just like the Fancy BMW version.

Anybody know of a cheap, small TV remote, I could try it with. If it were waterproof that would be a bonus too :clap

Maplins do them for 5.99.....not waterproof but I doubt you'll find one that is unless is silly money.

The judicious application of some silicone sealant might well help though and at 6 quid worth a go ;)

Is it me? :nenau Don't get me wrong, I love my 2610 but to me the remote control just seems a total waste of batteries and plastic. As far as I can see, the only function the remote control can perform which you don't have a dedicated button for on the unit is zoom in and zoom out - but both are available anyway by just touching the touch screen.

The only possible "benefit" I can see from the remote control is if for some reason, you wanted a back seat passenger to enter information. Can't see me ever using mine - although someone will now no doubt come up with a cracking reason for having it. :D

Depends on where you mount the unit. With a remote you can mount the unit above the clocks.

Remote Control....

I use the TT remote control mentioned above in conjunction with the BMW NavII which is mounted above the clocks and therefore too far away to use the buttons whilst on the move (I have short arms...... )

Makes the BMW left side buttons redundant, but the remote is, in my view, extremely useful when on the move.......

Another time I think I'd go for the Garmin 2720 and the TT mount, the combined cost of which will still be less than the RRP of the BMW unit.

Cheers

Long, long ago, when I got my first 25xx GPSR, I took the Garmin remote that came in the box and stuck it to the brake master cylinder with Velcro hook and loop tape. I then left it there for the next 18 months, and never removed it, even when I was washing the moto with a power washer. The remote worked fine, water does not seem to bother it.

The remote for the 27xx series is slightly different so far as the button layout is concerned, but substantially the same so far as the design and construction is concerned. I put Velcro on the back of it and stuck it in the same place at the beginning of last summer, and have not removed it since.

Garmin does not promise that the remote is waterproof because the design of the unit is such that the battery compartment is not sealed up. However, I can tell you from personal experience that water, snow, dust, dirt, pressure washers, etc. have no effect on the thing whatsoever. In other words, if you want to stick your existing remote on the moto and use it, go right ahead.

I like having the zoom in and zoom out buttons on the remote - I don't really use the other buttons much, though.
