Not sure if this question is in the right place?
I have tried and failed to get the two piece sump guard of my GS to change oil.
It is retained in conjunction with OEM crash bars.
Managed to get one piece off but the other is attached to the sump with no obvious means of release?
What am I missing?
Many thanks in advance.:blast

Needs moving to the Oilheads section.

All the relevant information.

Which (if any) bolts or nuts have you removed.

Which OEM crashbars do you have fitted ? (two types available for the standard GS, one where the lowers are attached to the upper section and can be undone and removed separately , the other are single piece and the entire side has to be removed).

Single piece crash bars. I have removed the four nuts underneath plus removed the cross.piece of the crash bars. This allowed me to pull the crash bars a little to the.side which then let me get the first piece of the sump guard off leaving the one attached to the sump giving rise to my problem. Thanks.

the inner bit is held on only by the nuts that also hold on the outer bit. sits against 4 rubberised spacers that can stick to the inner bit. should just pull off, but those spacers can be fragile and theyre not that cheap (for what they are) to replace so use care.

Many thanks for that, things are a little clearer. However when I had the lower plate off I did try to prise the one on the sump off but to no avail.(used very little pressure). What could make it so tight and is it safe to apply more leverage? Thanks again.

On a similar vein, are the two guards meant to be kept apart by something to prevent reverberation/vibration? Mine come together and are in contact with each other ( no gap) on the rear pair of studded threads

i suppose heat from the engine could melt slightly the rubber edges of the threaded spacers, sticking them to the plate. i dont have much experience though, the bikes i have removed these from have not put up as much of a fight as yours seems to be.

if any of the rubbers break, i suspect these will work:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-x-Anti...M6-20x10MM-Male-Boat-Car-Damper-/282743707318

the expensive originals have a 15mm long threaded shaft, the ebay ones are 18mm. i dont know if the hole in the sump is blind and shorter than 18mm, if it is youll need to cut a few mm off each.

Sounds like it hasn’t been off for some time, just get a bigger leaver and pry it off.... be careful the end of the leaver doesn’t go through the sump before the plate lets go.
