I'm off to Northern Spain/France at the end of June, is it worth removing my hand guards for some extra air flow? I'm concerned I'm going to bake. it's a 1200GSA

Just how hot do you think it's going to get:eek: You may find there is still snow high in the Pyrenees! We'll be in 40c plus in June with high humidity in the mid west and it's probably the last thing I would think of doing.

Just take light gloves and switch your grips off :augie.

A serious tip for hot weather is drink plenty of water via a camel back if you have one, keep your skin covered and keep your buff soaking wet which has a remarkable effect in cooling.

I've never found it a problem.
As Sgt says - just wear some light gloves - I've got some perforated Alpinestars motor cross gloves which are great for hot weather (but I have got a bit of a glove fetish ;) ).
I suppose you could remove the upper portion of the hand guard if you're really concerned - just two screws - but I wouldn't bother.

If it's really hot, you're more likely to suffer from your body overheating - even with its vents open and no liner my textile jacket is bloody hot especially at slow speeds in traffic and when stationary.

I keep the handguards on, but What I do is.......Airy gloves, cuffs left open, collar loose, ease off any waist and arm adjusters, shirt untucked, trousers legs open. If it's really hot I pour water on my head and neck and inside my jacket to soak my shirt and wear a soaking wet buff, although they do dry very quickly. The cooling effect of all that is quite remarkable. And, surprisingly it's cooler to keep stuff on than strip off but keeping moving is best of all.

There are a lot of huge insects in Spain, judging by the state of my hand guards and screen. They would hurt if splating into your knuckles. Removing the guards won't have that much of an effect on cooling but will expose your hands to 80mph insect guts.

Yes but the real beauty of this place is the tightly wound folk like you that make all the sarcasm worth while.

Keep up the good work both of you.

Now back to the OP, I'm of to Spain and as part of my preparation I'm currently in Mexico adapting to the combination of heat and language with alcohol throw in for good measure. As for hand guards well weirdly mine are there to protect the bike in the event of a spill whilst on the trails but I guess as you have a GSA the practical application of them flew over your head......

i had an old pair of summer gloves, which although a bit tattie were very comfortable.got one of them rotary hole punches and punched about 30 holes in each glove, feckin brilliant for hot weather.[yes im a tight bastard]only problem is now the summers here i cant find them.

Christ, it was only an idea to try to keep a bit cooler, I didn't realise 'some' people would find the idea that ridiculous!!

I'll just shut up then...

Hi there, I ride down here all the time , and there is no need to take the handguards off . I wear fingerless unlined leather gloves, as has been said leave the cuffs open. But when it gets over 38 C , you need to cover up because the air is hotter than your body temperature, so get some water drank and pour some down your back/ front/ buff / ect. and enjoy.

Whilst racing around the roads, trails and snarly off road tracks last week in Aragon Spain it was 35 degrees
I took the top part of my hand guards off on the GSA - took 2 minutes as its one nut n bolt per hand guard
bit cooler on the hands then
2 further minutes to pop em back on before the long ride home
no dramas

Rode my GS in Australia in heat up to 45 degrees never felt the need to remove handguards just wore light BMW gloves you will be fine, gets a bit hot at traffic lights but warm is better than cold I reckon

Take your jacket off.
Getting overheated on a motorcycle is quite dangerous.

What the f*** are you talking about ? What's twatface, unless you're looking in the mirror when posting ?

You've got to laugh though-if someone is worried about overheating because of 2 small bits of plastic on the ends of the bars then he needs to also think about removing the sodding great piece of perspex sat in front of him as well.

Leave your jacket on.
Falling off without a jacket is quite dangerous :D
